Jean eased into the window seat, setting her bag within reach. Max slept in the next room. Two scraggly humans were too small a target to bother with, but she'd left both doors open in case. )

Jean crouched in the dark, waiting for her night vision to kick in. She started to wonder if one of her little additions had finally kicked the bucket; vague shapes turned sharp, outlines in green, and she let out a breath. The only thing worse than having wires in your skull was having wires that didn't goddamn work.

'Anything?' )

Summary: Early in their travels, Jean and Max look for a safe place to spend the night.

Jean hauled herself over the wooden fence. Max dropped down beside her, grunting. Yellowing grass encroached upon the cement walkway around an empty in-ground pool; one of those plastic tricycles hung over the edge, a half-deflated inner tube draped over it.

"In the house," Jean muttered, half dragging Max until he yanked his arm away. Pieces of the shattered sliding glass door crunched under her boots. She snorted when she had to reach around the frame to unlock the door.

Max played with the mangled blinds. 'We should set some ground rules.' )

Summary: A working generator plus a TV in decent condition plus a surprise cache of DVDs equals movie night. Also, Jean is bad with women.

She had to squint when Max turned on the light. The basement air was cool, a nice change from the desert heat. Whoever had owned it Before had been in the middle of turning it into a rec room, but never had the chance to finish. Wood paneling gave way to cement floors and walls. On one end a couch facing a wide-screen TV; on the other end buckets and a roller brush covered in crusted paint.

"We shouldn't waste the electricity," she said. Max sighed.

"Movie night isn't going to kill the generator. Look, Jean. We need a night off. All of us. Including you. I think you cracked your knuckles fifty times over breakfast."

Jean frowned. "It's just a habit."

"Right, a habit that goes into overdrive when you're stressed. Don't try to bullshit me." Max pointed at his chest. "I'm a med student."

Were. But Jean didn't say that out loud anymore.

And in my expert medical opinion, staring at a TV for so long your brain turns into mush is like the third best way to relieve stress. )

Notes: My brain decided to take a break from Ghost Sight. I've been doodling with After The World for a while now; originally it was a zombie apocalypse, but now it's an alternative-universe-took-over-the-world-with-cyborgs apocalypse. Jean and Max have been traveling together long enough to upgrade from comrades-of-convenience to friends.

Jean awoke not in her bed but lying on rocky ground, the thin blanket a mere formality. The glowing embers of a dying cookfire provided the only light, but she could see the rock walls around her perfectly fine. The one useful side-effect of her near-conversion; but it didn't explain where she was beyond 'in a cave'.

She was alone, but the nearby pack belonged to Max. )
