She hadn't seen him, which was probably for the best.

She seemed...she seemed happy, or at least content, at peace. That was good. He loved her, and he wanted her to be happy, more than anything. Which was why he couldn't tell her he was there, he was alive, he remembered her now. It would just reopen old wounds.

He knew all about that.

But he'd seen that she was happy, and that was all that mattered, in the end. She'd moved on.

He stayed as far away as he could from the city they'd lived in, after that.

Placing someone's happiness above your own is love. Lying, not so much. I think this guy loses more points than he gains.

Ruth would agree with you there. Even if being with him doesn't work out now, after his disappearance and now he has all of his memories back, she still at the very least wants the same closure he gets here. And she would try to make it work. There's an AU bubbling where he actually does contact her, and he ends up much better off in the long run for it.
