He woke up and stayed awake on the third day, a little bleary still, but long enough to eat a little before fading back into unconsciousness.
On the fifth day, he asked for details about what happened, why the metal-mage had let him go, but what Kit had said was nearly all the detail they could supply, other than that the metal-mage said that if they bothered him again, they wouldn't get away alive.
The seventh day, he tried to get out of bed and promptly fell over--at least he hadn't ripped his stitches open, but maybe he was healed enough that that wasn't so much of a risk anymore.
Kit helped him out onto the deck on the ninth day, and everyone started clapping--it was the most awkward moment Mel thought he'd ever known.
On the eleventh day, he reached down and pulled the water up to him, reassured when there was no heat, no pain, no disconnect as it slipped through his fingers.
The water in the lagoon when they arrived at home on the thirteenth day was a clear and pretty blue-green, and he smiled a little, leaving it where it was but feeling it dance around him.
He spent the fifteenth day lying in a chair on the beach, watching the sunlight dance across the water and trying not to move too much.
The ship left without him on the seventeenth day--he wasn't so much dizzy anymore, exactly, but the doctor Kit had taken him to was still concerned, and he was still in a lot of pain, so he watched them sail away and promised he'd be back with them on the next trip.
When the Eagle came back, on the forty-sixth day, even though it still hurt, especially when he bent over too far, he needed it, and was more than ready to be back on the open water, with the Eagle's crew and his brother whom he loved.

Yeah. It's kind of hard, writing Mel-centric canvasses, knowing what I know about Kit and having to write how much Mel worships his big brother :
