Nacre #9
Name: shadowsong26
Story: A Little Healthy Piracy Never Hurt Anyone
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: Nacre #9. Buried [treasure]
Supplies and Materials: canvas (977 FY), modeling clay, pastels (my current gen card G5 cutting edge)
Word Count: 367
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Mel Artwick, Kit Artwick
Warnings: Violence
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
Mel reached for the ocean around the heavy, low-riding Bardic ship and froze it in place before spurring the Scarlet Eagle on to where the others could leap aboard.
"Nicely done," Captain Kit said. "How long do we have 'fore they're free?"
"Maybe s'long as an hour," Mel informed him.
"Perfect."
The Scarlet Eagle didn't typically engage in piracy, but they were running dangerously low on funds--and, more importantly, food--and there was no Artwick rule against it. And, even better, Bardic ships were usually barely guarded. The crew of an Islander ship could take what they needed without risking casualties.
Grinning a little, Mel followed his cousin and the others over to the ship to begin looting.
He was met by a very angry metal-mage, with silver swords. "Free my ship."
Mel blinked, surprised--from what he'd heard, metal-mages never left their villages.
Kit just smiled jovially at him. "Be reasonable. We'll just be takin' our fair share of your food, maybe some pretty things to trade. Put down your weapons. No one need be harmed by this.
The metal-mage spun his swords out, slashing Kit's bicep. "I said free my ship."
Kit's eyes narrowed and he drew his own sword--which proved to be a mistake. Before Mel could shout a warning and stop him, the sword dissolved and reshaped into nails, pinning Kit to the deck.
"Captain!" Mel shouted, grabbing at the ice around them, hoping to stop the metal-mage before he could do Kit serious harm.
He saw one of the silver blades leave its sheath, and the ice around him disolved as something hot slammed into him, knocking him off the ship and down into darkness.
Kit was with him when he woke up some time later, back on the Scarlet Eagle. "You okay, little brother?"
"Nngh.." was about the most intelligent answer Mel could muster up.
"We all got out alive, at least. Bastard unpinned me and took his sword out of you once the ice melted."
"Nngh."
Kit brushed a stray hair off of Mel's forehead. "Just sleep, all right?"
Mel closed his eyes. His brother would find another way to keep them supplied. He was sure of it.

Yeah, I think the metal-mage wasn't interested in actually killing anyone. Just keeping himself unrobbed.
