Summary: Marian is having a string of bad days.
Marian.
I tossed and turned in my dreams. The woman leaning over me wasn’t tall, but she had a powerful presence. Clawed hands reached for me.
Marian…
Her voice rasped as she took my face in her hands. In her eyes were fire--a fire burning her from the inside out. The markings on her face rippled.
MARIAN!
She shrieked directly in my face. My eyes flew open and I flailed in the sheets, then laid still.
“What do you want now?! What?! What?! It’s the wee hours of the morning and I’m tired!”
I can’t sleep.
“You. Can’t. Sleep. Neither can I!!! Have you considered maybe I need sleep? Have you totally forgotten what it’s like to have a body???”
Xiu He was yelling back before I finished, more loudly than my stage whisper meant to keep the house from waking.
Fine! Let her have it her way!
I let out my best hysterical scream, flopping on my belly to pound my fists into the mattress. Then I leapt up, stomping up and down on the bed and flinging pillows and covers everywhere.
Xiu He paused as though taking a breath. I could feel her watching intently. I ramped up the tantrum, swearing more violently than I ever had in my life. My voice took on her same kind of hoarse rasp, and I could taste ash in my mouth.
Something instead broke open, and when I flopped back down on the bed, I let it all come whirling out in a gust. With a soft pop, the entire bed caught on fire in a ring around me.
Xiu He had stopped. Now I stopped. Robin came rushing in and then backed himself back into the doorway, staring in horror. I turned my head slowly towards him, looking at him guiltily through the flames. I’m not sure what he saw on my face, but he turned pale. I felt sick.
When I jumped up and rushed through the fire, he yelled “No!” at me, rushing forward as well to grab me and haul me out to the hall, calling for the extinguisher.
Grandmother Dee answered with something I didn’t quite hear. A large gust of wind raced past us, whipped the bed clothes together, and smothered the fire.
Robin and I exchanged a quick glance. “She’s really mad.”
He nodded, folding his arms and staring off into space. I moved to hug him, then stopped.
He looked down and saw my worry. He ruffled my hair. “It’ll be okay.”
“How?”
Grandmother Dee’s slippers could be heard before she could be seen thundering up the hall. Grandfather Liu was plodding several paces behind her. “You’re giving this old body a workout, child.”
“It’s not me!”
She shushed me, smoothing back my hair and checking me for burns. “I know it’s not, sweet Marian.”
“This isn’t fair.”
“This is life.” Looking at the pain on my face, she paused to pull me closer. “But you’re strong enough to see this through. How about we sit up together a while and we’ll try a new draught to see if we can get you two to sleep?”
There was grumbling in my head, but I nodded obediently. Even knowing it wouldn’t do anything. None of them did.

But then, obnoxious new roommates rarely settle quickly.

But yeah, there's the intentionally losing control and that slipping into unintentionally losing control. Very scary indeed.

Though it sort of helps Grandmother Dee has been teaching them magic for years and this may not have been the first spell-woven accident in the house.
