On the last day of kindergarten, Teacher gave them all rubber animals that she felt best fit them. Miranda, two years before, got a leopard, fierce and sleek. Jack's friend Egg got a solemn little owl. And Jack got an inch-long, bright orange clownfish. "Because you're so funny," Teacher said, then explained something more.

He didn't get the rest until he was much older, swinging between clubs and moods and significant others. Clownfish, Teacher said, lived in anemones, and adapted to the sting.
He'd learned to live that way long ago.

He still kept the clownfish on his desk. For luck.
