"I'm not that special, you know."

She says it into his chest, on a sunny summer day when the air smells like flowers and the grass is high enough to hide them where they're lying close together, and it's not anything close to the truth.

But she's still talking. "I mean, I'm just your garden-variety girl, really." She props her chin up on his shoulder and smiles at him, sun-drunk and sleepy. "But you. You look at me like I'm spectacular."

"You are," he tells her, with all the sincerity he can muster. "You're so..." But he can't find a word that's good enough, rich enough, just enough to make up all she is. Spectacular is close but it's all flash and surface; it doesn't get at the heart of her, the compassion and the sweetness and the bright, living happiness that suffuses everything she does.

Her smile widens and it blinds him, strikes him dumb. "There's you, too," she says, softly. "You are..." She pauses, but she's better with words than he is, and it doesn't stop her long. "When I'm with you, if you're holding me or just near me, I feel so safe. Protected, and cherished." She drops a kiss on his collarbone. "Like you'll never stop loving me, no matter what, and you'll never stop protecting me."

That he knows how to answer. He props himself up on an elbow, and turns to look her full in the face. "I won't," he says. It sounds like the vow it is. "Not ever."

The corners of her eyes crinkle when she smiles.

He loves that about her.

In my current WIP, they go get Chinese food for everyone while Noah and Chloe finish unpacking everything, and apparently are best friends when they come back.

"Yes, he is. Miss Joy can back me up,” Jackson argued lightly, before he and Joy started giggling in a way that made the back of Noah’s neck burn.<\i>
