She closes her eyes, takes a couple of deep breaths. Her hand reaches out, fingers feeling the door. Letting her back rest against it, she tries to calm and control her body and her mind. It’s been a while since the dizziness arrived so sudden and unexpected. It caught her completely off guard.
“Darling?”
She opens her eyes when she feels his hand on her forehead. A warm hand against her skin. She can feel the cold sweat running down her spine.
His face is spinning in front of her eyes, but she can still make out the worried look on his face.
Sighing she closes her eyes again, her fingers touching the cold doorknob. Flinching, as if burned, she pulls her hand back.
“Freya?”
She tries to smile reassuringly when she hears his concerned voice.
“It’s okay. Just dizzy.”
His hand moves from her face to her shoulder. He stays near, ready to catch her should she faint. He knows the effects the dizziness can give her.
“Want to sit down?”
Out of the corner of his eye, he sees a security guard coming closer. Suspicious. After all, the sign on the door says ‘no entry’.
Nick helps her down when he sees her nod.
“Can you give me the bottle of water please. I’m really not feeling all too well.”
Reaching inside the backpack he takes out the bottle, opening it, before handing it to her.
“Is she okay?”
The security guard sets himself down on one knee next to Nick, while Freya – her eyes still closed – carefully takes some sips of the refreshing water. Sighing she puts the bottle down and looks up.
“Yeah. I’m okay. Just a little dizzy.”
The man nods. “Stay seated for a little while longer. You still look way too pale…”
Closing her eyes again, she lets her head rest against the door. The security guard leaves again while Nick sets himself down right next to her.
“Darling. Are you okay? Really?”
Of course he noticed the look that just crossed her face. She nods, turning her face towards him, letting her head rest on his shoulder.
“Yeah. I just feel so weak when this happens.”
Carefully he wraps his arm around her shoulder.
“It’s been a while that this happened without a reason or a warning, no?”
She nods and sighs. “And here I thought things might have been getting better.”
Nick shakes his head, his fingers caressing her arm. “They are getting better.”
He always worries when she sounds so sad and down. It’s not like her, to lose her optimistic view on life.
“Here, drink a bit of this. It will give you a sugar boost to wear off the dizziness.”
Opening her eyes she sees the security man hold out a bottle to her. Energy drink. Smiling gratefully she accepts the bottle and drinks a little.
“Thank you.”
He just smiles and shakes his head, before walking further, continuing his route.
They stay seated a couple of minutes longer, until she has gained a little color on her cheeks again. He holds out his hand for her. Smiling she accepts it, letting him pull her up.
“Okay?”
Nodding she takes a step, not letting go of his hand.
“Yeah, still shaky legs, but it’s okay.”
Together they walk further, Nick insisting they get out of this place - after all, it’s way too muggy in here – and back into the fresh air. Nodding Freya agrees. Fresh air is exactly what she needs now. That and Nick’s hand in hers. She knows he’s not going to leave her side anyway. Not now. Not after the attack of the dizziness. He knows she doesn’t mind having him really close to her.
Carefully he wraps his arm around her waist. Of course he notices the happy smile on her face when she brings her own arm across her belly, her fingers linking with his.
“Sorry about this darling.”
He shakes his hand, squeezing her hand gently. “Don’t be. Are you feeling better?”
She nods, letting her head rest on his shoulder for a second again. Before deciding that isn’t an easy way to walk.
“Yeah. But… Would you mind going home already? I know we were planning on staying here longer, and then take a stroll through town, but…”
Turning his head, he kisses her lips. “No problem. Let’s go home.”
Grateful she returns his kiss. Walking towards the exit of the zoo. “Can I ask another little favor before we go?”
Nodding he starts walking to the left, ignoring the exit. “Can I ask you something? What is it that you like so much about flamingo’s?”
Giggling she shrugs. “I don’t know. Perhaps because I think they are sensitive animals. Because one flamingo is strange and boring, but have you seen about two million of them around a lake? It’s an amazing sight. Not that I have seen it in real, but I’ve seen it on pictures, and I’d like to see it in real one day. But up until then, I’ll have to keep looking at photo’s and visit the zoo…”
“How about we look it up at home, and we go there on our next holiday?”
Surprised she stops. It earns her a questioning look. “You serious?”
“Why shouldn’t I be?”
Biting her lips she wraps her arms around his neck, tip-toeing so she can kiss his lips. “Thank you.”
Laughing he shakes his head. “What are you thanking me for?”
She pulls up her shoulders. “For putting up with me. For your patience and your love and… for everything really. For helping me deal with the relapse…”
There are tears in her eyes when she mentions it. And she takes a firmer grip on his hand.
“I can’t… can’t handle this alone Nick…”
Smiling sadly, he takes her in his arms, hugging her. And she clings back to him. “You don’t have to do this alone. We can handle this. You know we can. We will do this together.”
Sniffling she nods, kissing him again.
“Now come on. Your flamingo’s are waiting. And I’ve heard there are baby ones…”
Chuckling she lets him lead the way.
