Summary: I was watching fireworks last night, so. Have three generations of kaboom. "Palm tree" is a popular explosion-type thing, if you were wondering.

Rivienne, Tristan, Cassandra, and Rudeth are wiltedviolets'. Carmen is property of Gussu, who is not here. Dmitry, Peace, Jack, and Grandma are mine. (Grandpa is... vaguely communal?) Comments, criticism, and questions are all appreciated.

Summers were full of ticks and chiggers swarming in the fields around the house. Daddy always started saying he would get out the weed-whacker sometime around April, but it usually took him until the wildflowers were growing up around the horse pens in May to get to it. Then Tristan turned twelve, and he never had to do it again. By the time July came around that first year, Tristan made him a deal: he would mow and weed the whole yard and the horse pen and the chicken pen and around the gardens all summer, and a big wide swath of field as well, if they could set off their own fireworks out in it on the Fourth.

Daddy didn't like the idea at all, at first; he said it was an unnecessary expense, and would spook the horses. Mother thought it would set something on fire. Even Rivienne didn't like the idea, as she already had plans to go to the show at the park with her friends. Tristan didn't give up. He did the mowing, but dragged his feet about it, as well as all his other chores; he gazed wistfully at the big fireworks stall out by the grocery every time they went out, until someone dragged him away; he talked up the sparklers and the roman candles around Cassandra, until she was in on it.

In the end, Daddy never could refuse Cassandra when she was that determined, and for several years thereafter, it became a tradition.

"FIREWORKS!"

"FIREWORKS! YEAAAH!"

The boys leapt out of the car the moment it stopped and ran off towards the barn with their friend Carmen trailing behind them. He was quieter, but no less energetic, and Rivienne expected all three of them would be up until midnight, whatever she did. An answering squeal of happiness echoed from the house, and moments later Hitomi sppeared at the door.

"Mama, Grandma, Tristan! They're here!" Hitomi yelled back into the house. She was a sight as she came out, with red, white, and blue barrettes all in her long black hair and a ruffled, sequin-spangled skirt of the same colors that looked like she'd made it (mostly) herself. Her brother wasn't long after her, in a glitter-glued t-shirt that may also have been made by Hitomi, and Rivienne leaned down to hug them both.

"Wow, you two look festive. Have you had a good summer?"

Hitomi's smile was infectious. "Yeah! We went to the pool a bunch of times, and we bought fireworks, and Mama says if we're good Uncle Tristan can take us to Kings Island!"

"We got a bunch of sparklers and spinners and one really big one," continued Hitoshi, holding his hands up as an example of "really big". Rivienne did her best to look impressed.

Cassandra was standing in the doorway by that point; she looked tired, and she'd dyed her hair again recently. "Hey guys, Grandma's almost ready with dinner. Where's Rudy and Dmitry?"

"They ran off towards the barn. Why don't you two go round them up?" Rivienne said to the kids. The response was a squeal of acceptance, and they ran off in the same direction.

There were layers of meaning in the smile she gave Cassandra, and in the half-shrug she got back. But there would be time for questions later.

"Okay, just hold it steady while I light it, and keep it pointed that way. Don't ever point a lit firework at something, no matter how funny you think it is. You might light something on fire, and then fire trucks come and Grandma yells at you and no more fun is had by anybody."

"You say that like that's something you actually did," Peace said from a ways off, setting up bottles and a space near the sidewalk for the bigger ones. "Can we trust you around fireworks?"

"Of course! I know everything not to do. Jack, do you think I can be trusted with fireworks?"

"Heck yeah!" Jack grinned as Dmitry lit the roman candle. Dmitry stepped back as it started shooting balls.

Peace came up behind him, giving him a Look with a raised eyebrow. Jack's focus was entirely on the candle- as was Dmitry's, until he felt Peace pinch his butt and jumped a little.

"Pfft. You act so responsible." Dmitry smirked.

"Come show me again which of these need a twenty-foot clearance. Some of the labels are in Chinese."
