The sight of the farmhouse after a hunt always made a sense of home wash over Noah, especially after a long hunt. This one had been four days, but he had been stubborn and refused to give up on the deer he was tracking. He had emerged victorious, but it was one of the longest times he had been gone since they had moved to the farm too. He missed his family, his girls especially, and he couldn’t get the buck tied up behind the barn fast enough.
He didn’t run for the back porch, but his stride was fast. It was near supper time. Everyone would be in the kitchen, and he would be going in by the kitchen door. It looked like everyone was about to sit down to eat when he entered, but it was baby April playing on the kitchen floor that caught his attention first.
“DADDY!” she shrieked, ungracefully pushing herself to her feet. She nearly fell forward, but turned it into a tottering little run towards him at the last second. “DADDY DADDY DADDY!”
Noah’s heart swelled in his chest. Unless she had learned to walk in the days he was gone, those were her first free steps. He laughed loudly, swooping down to pick her up off the ground and into his arms. That was the best welcome he could have received.
He smiled and pinched one of her cheeks lightly. “Missed you too, baby girl.”
