They were all looking up to him.
Fernando paced in his tent. This silly war wasn’t going the way he wanted it to. He ran a slightly bruised hand through his black hair and sighed.
“Majesty,” a voice called from behind him.
Fernando turned around to see his second in command, Francisco Alvares Castro, walking towards with a young man behind him.
“What is it?” Fernando asked.
The young man handed something to Francisco.
“Is that what I think it is?” Fernando said reaching out for it.
“Yes, it’s a letter from Her Majesty.”
Fernando tore the envelope open and pulled out the letter. He turned his back to the two men and began to read.
“Good news I hope,” Francisco said putting a hand on Fernando’s shoulder.
Fernando was silent for a moment before turning around to face his friend. He had a huge smile on his face.
“Gentlemen, I am now the father of a baby girl!”
Francisco slapped Fernando on the back. “What has the Queen named her?”
“Elisa has named her Maria Amelihna after her sister and my mother,” Fernando said trying to hide a smile.
Francisco smiled slightly before dismissing the page boy.
After the boy had left, Francisco walked up to Fernando. Fernando was still gripping the paper and smiling wildly.
“Are you ready to give your speech to the troops?”
Fernando folded the paper up into tiny folds and slipped it into his jerkin.
“I believe I’ve found the perfect words to say,” Fernando said.
Francisco nodded and bowed to Fernando and left the tent.
Left alone, Fernando stewed over his happy news.
“I have a daughter. A little girl I will love and spoil. I hope she looks like her mama.” He said to himself.
He walked out of the tent to find his men standing in four long lines.
Fernando cleared his throat and approached where Francisco stood.
“I come to you not as a king, but as your brother in battle,” he started looking over the many faces starting back at him.
“We all fight for the same things, our freedom, our families’ freedom, but most of all our children’s freedom.”
There were whistles in the crowd.
“We will return to our wives’ arms, where we rightfully belong, once this war is over!”
His men yelled their approval.
Fernando saluted his men before turning to Francisco.
“You really got them roused up.”
Fernando nodded. He had meant his speech. The quicker this war was over he could return to Elisa, little Juan, and his baby girl. He would repeat that mantra through his head. It was for the children.
