It wasn’t that Noah didn’t like Jax’s family and friends in New York. They were nice, interesting people. He liked them fine, he just wasn’t like them. Jax had told him they had money, but Noah thought he meant that they had money saved up, maybe a good bit. You would have to, living in New York, wouldn’t you? But he hadn’t expected the reality, and the world he was in now made him wildly uncomfortable. He stood in a house where the living room and kitchen combined were bigger than his cabin, surrounded by things he could never dream of owning, and felt lacking. So Noah stayed quiet when Jax brought him around with him, watching everyone and wondering how he was ever going to give Jax what he deserved.

He silently excused himself, and didn’t notice Chloe follow him until she spoke.

“Why are you sulking?” she asked when they were in the kitchen, startling him.

That irritated him. In his right mind, he would have heard her footsteps and breathing, but now all he heard was the damn city and a life he couldn’t afford. “Ain’t sulkin’,” he half-snapped in response, opening the fridge to stare into it. Beers he had never heard of stared back at him, and he desperately wished for a jar of his father’s moonshine at the moment.

“You don’t know my daddy like I do. I know sulking when I see it.”

Noah frowned and held back a retort, knowing it would only prove her point. “Just hate this city, is all,” he said as he let the fridge door slam shut, the excuse sounding pathetic even to his ears.

“I already knew that, but that’s not why you keep looking at everyone like they’re going to take Jax away from you.” Chloe leaned against the counter and crossed her arms over her chest, staring at him determinedly. “And I’m not leaving you alone until you tell me.”

Her stubbornness reminded him of his mother, and Noah knew she was serious. He let out an annoyed sigh, and rubbed his hand across his eyes, feeling his wedding band against his skin. “You all are gonna take him from me,” he muttered lowly. “I can’t compare to this. To any of it. I know you all probably think it’s a joke, but there’s a reason I grow and hunt for my own food. Only way to get it, or it used to be.” He sighed again, more heavily, and still didn’t look at her. “Ain’t got nothin’ but what I brought, and that ain’t gonna last long here. Job isn’t gonna bring in shit.” Noah stopped, his throat closing for a second. His voice was rough when he finished. “He’s gonna realize he don’t deserve me.”

He felt Chloe staring at him, and when he looked back, her eyes were narrowed thoughtfully. “You’re really hot,” she eventually said, taking him off guard. “But you’re also acting really stupid right now.”

Noah’s shoulders jerked, before he straightened with a glare. “Watch it.”

“Nope,” she answered easily, unaffected. “You are. He married you. I’ve known Jax a long time. That’s not something he would do lightly. It’s not.”

His glare slowly melted, but he wasn’t entirely convinced. “Yeah, he did. Back in Georgia, where I made sense. I don’t make sense here.”

Chloe shook her head, but her tone when she spoke again was a bit more soothing. “If Jax wanted someone who made sense here, he would have married someone from here. But he didn’t. He went back to Georgia, and met you, and fell in love with you. That isn’t going to stop just because you’re in a new place.”

Noah couldn’t argue with what she was saying, but there was still a small shred of doubt.

It must have showed on his face, because Chloe sighed in exasperation, her tone going back to the dry one she had been using with him. “Jax wouldn’t rely on you for anything anyway. Something something Bible, something something, the Lord will supply your needs.”

It was his turn to stare with narrowed eyes, trying to figure out if she was mocking him. After a long moment, he corrected her. “And my God will supply every need in yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Even if Noah wasn’t sure if Chloe was making fun of him or not, quoting the verse made him feel better.

Chloe looked impressed, seeming to realize something. “Yeah, that. What else?”

“…What else what?”

“What else does the Bible say about what you’re worried about? Providing?”

He only had to think for a second before the words poured from his mouth. “Therefore, do not be anxious saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” He felt a sense of peace wash over him.

Chloe was smiling. “Yeah. You’re not going to lose him.” She walked over to pat him on the arm, her touch maybe lingering on his bicep. “Trust me.”

Surprisingly, he did.

Good on Chloe for getting Noah out of his funk. It seems like he was just going to end up miserable otherwise.
