January

"Well?"

Nida unfastened her bracelets and set them in the jewelry box. "I think I have a chance. Better than Lena or Rema. I'm sure the letter helped, even if he never mentioned it. He couldn't take his eyes off me."

"Good."

February

Nida rested her fingers on her lips, resisting the urge to smile. She had a very specific task to do, long-range, and it was stupid to get too attached this early. That opened the door for drastic mistakes.

But she could still taste him, and still hear the waterfall thundering behind them.

March

"It's accomplished."

"Already?"

"He proposed this afternoon." Nida showed the ring, knowing that none of the swooping sensation in her stomach was showing on her face. She was too well-trained for that.

"I'll see to it that the council pushes this through quickly, before he can change his mind."

He won't, Nida thought, but knew better than to say out loud.

April

Nida's breath caught in her throat when she saw Sorell waiting for her by the waterfall. This is real. Even the parts that aren't...this is real.

She swallowed hard, and took the next step.

May

"So soon?" she asked the midwife, bewildered.

The old lady smiled at her. "Congratulations."

June

"You need to be careful. There's always a risk, during this period."

"A risk?"

"That he'll lose interest in you, and take a mistress."

"I'm not going to be able to sway him. Not without losing him entirely."

"No, but you can keep him from doing further damage. That's all we need for now. Do what you can to make sure his eyes don't wander."

"I know my duty."

July

Late that night, Nida watched her husband sleeping, running the pearl necklace through her fingers. You weren't supposed to be sweet. You were supposed to be a monster.

August

"I didn't think it would be intercepted," Lena insisted. "How was I supposed to know they're reading our mail?"

"I'm his consort! Of course my family is watched!"

"We need to ensure our support! Especially with a child--"

"Don't you dare pin this on me!"

Lena’s retort was cut off. "Are you losing his affection?"

Nida flinched. "I don't think so. I...he accused me, and I...may have overreacted."

"Can you recover?"

She considered. "...With time."

"Lena will pay the price for her folly. You will act as he would expect you to act."

Nida bowed her head. "Of course."

September

Nida paced back and forth in her room. I can't go back to him too soon. Even if I were fully honest, I'd be hurt by his accusations. I need to sulk a while longer. It shouldn't be hard, he is the monster I thought he was, he showed me that.

I certainly don't miss his smile.

October

Lena was still in prison, but Nida couldn't do anything for her, and they were getting antsy about her continued separation from her husband, especially with her pregnancy growing more obvious by the day.

Nida closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then pushed the door of his study open, keeping her eyes closed so she could delay the impact of seeing him again. "Sorell?"

"Nida."

She opened her eyes. He was looking at her. Oh. "...I've missed you."

November

She had to give him a gift, of course. And it had to be personal. She fingered the decorations on the hilt.

"Problems, Nida?"

She looked up. "No, of course not. Just deciding the best way to present my gift." She held firm under the suspicious stare, refusing to be the one to break away.

"...Good."

December

She's so small...

Nida traced the line of her daughter's profile with wonder. I will teach you what's right. And somehow keep him from knowing how I've wronged him.

"Nida?"

She looked up. They finally let him in to see her. She smiled. "Hello."

He sat down next to her bed. "She's beautiful." He bent down and kissed her forehead.

"I'd like to call her Deva." It meant 'pearl.' To remind me.

He smiled. "Deva is perfect."

Oh my god, I love this look from the other side. It casts the original piece in such a different light. Great job!

This is what a reimaging is all about: casting the original in a drastically different light. Very well done.

ALL MY HOLIDAYS AT ONCE.

YOU WROTE ANOTHER ONE.

I think I like October the best, but this is so... I want to put it all fancy on a page with the first one and have them together and be happy.

Oh wow. This just--it changes the first one so very much, and it's incredible how you did that. Great job.
