Summary: Set between arcs 1 and 2, Jaymie takes his daughter out to a rink. A slightly edited version of the meme fic. Comments, criticism, and questions are all appreciated.

The rink was solidly mediocre: cleanish rental skates, neither empty nor crowded with people, tiny refreshment stand. It was all Jayme could think to expect, really. He'd gotten a pair of skates because Wendy had given him a sad look, but he had no intention of getting out there and flopping around. If she wanted to do it, she could, and he'd stay sitting down somewhere reading the news on his phone and trying not to feel old. It wasn't even that he was old, really, so much as having gotten back to Portland all of a week ago and not wanting to think too hard about the "adventure" he'd had over Christmas. Maybe that was why she wanted to get out so much; where he was just tired, she was probably restless.

He rubbed his eyes underneath his sunglasses. It was a little too dark in the rink to see the phone's screen that well, but the glow of his eyes created stupid amounts of glare. That had been an annoying realization, the first time he'd managed to keep them off for more than a minute or so.

(He was getting better at that, slowly.)

So instead he watched Wendy for a while. She was doing pretty well out there, turning easily, swinging around in little circles that flung her hair around under her little knit hat. He wasn't clumsy, but he sure as hell couldn't do that. It seemed effortless, though when she skated closer, she looked tense. Her lips were pressed in a thin line, and he could tell she was concentrating. She was really into it.

Was she really into skating? Was that a thing he'd missed? He sat his phone down on his lap and frowned. Then something caught his attention on the other side of the rink.
