A soft groan escapes her when she wakes up. The notes of an old song ringing through her room. It’s her radio-clock, set at 9u30. A bit early for her, on a Saturday morning. Certainly after a late Friday evening. But it’s training within an hour. And she’d never miss that. No matter the hour she crawled in her bed the evening before.

Yawning she turns on her back, only now noticing she’s still holding the handkerchief that caught her tears last night. Rubbing her eyes she curses the headache she woke up with. She knows what caused it. Or at least she thinks she knows. Too little sleep. And the crying…

There was no reason for the tears. And yet they wouldn’t stop coming. Looking at the ceiling she recalls all she was feeling last night. Sad. Lonely. Angry. Her hands ball to fists and she can feel her nails pressing in her flesh.

There was no reason to feel alone and sad and angry. Now there is. Not back then. And she does. Now. She’s angry at herself. For yesterday evening. For crying for no reason. For the feelings she can’t explain.

“Wake up sleepy head. Wake up sleepy head.”

She rolls her eyes when she hears the silly voice. It’s her back-up alarm clock. And it almost makes her smile.

Taking a deep breath, she gets out of her bed. She only has ten minutes to get dressed, pack her bag and have breakfast. And then she has to be on her bike, or she won’t be arriving at training in time.

She’s ready in five. Without the breakfast. Doesn’t feel like eating. Still makes herself a quick toast though.

A humorless chuckles escapes when she arrives at her bike and realizes she forgot her bottle of water upstairs. Too bad. She’ll buy an Aquarius in the cantina.

Surprisingly, it feels good to cycle. The fresh air calms her mind a bit. She hopes training will calm her completely.

There is no one downstairs when she arrives in the gym. Looking up she checks the clock on the wall. Ten more minutes before training is supposed to start. It surprises her a little. She’s earlier than expected.

Shrugging she walks upstairs to the changing room. Not in the mood to wait for the others to arrive. Wonders, only a little bit, why Saturday trainings never start at the hour they should start. Most only arrive in the changing room at the exact hour they should be standing on the tatami.

Getting chanced into her kimono takes but a couple of minutes. And when she arrives in the dojo, she’s the first one. She wonders if the guys are already in the changing room.

She sets herself on a bench, letting her back and her head resting against the wall. Her eyes closed against the bright light in the room. The sun shining through the window is a little blinding.

She doesn’t yet open her eyes when she hears the door open again. It’s only when Nick sets himself next to her that she opens her eyes. Smiles when he kisses her.

“You look tired.”

The comment makes her nod. “I am tired.”

Carefully his fingers caress her cheek and he kisses her again.

“So, who else is here today?”

“Sensei, Chris, Rob and those 3 new ones.”

She nods before closing her eyes again, letting her head rest on his shoulder until the others walk in.

“Good morning. Come on, let’s get training started.”

They bow when they step on the mats, and she raises her arms when she sees how Nick is moving in for a kick, blocking his leg. Rolling her eyes she shakes her head when she sees the broad smile on his face. Knows how much he’s looking forward to a decent training. And she is as well. But… Knowing Sensei, there’s a pretty big chance he won’t let them train together.

The warming-up is a decent one. Not as tiresome as the one Nick sometimes gives, but she’s warm and stretched, and that is the most important thing. She can do without yet another injury for a while.

“Nick, come here please.”

A soft sigh escapes her when sensei is explaining the exercise. They are even, eight today, and she knows how much sensei hates training with new ones. He’ll always take Nick or Chris or Rob, whenever he’s able too. And deep down, she can’t blame him. She prefers training with someone of the same level as well…

“Okay, everybody understood?”

They all nod and she smiles a little when she sees the face Rob is making behind sensei’s back.

“Okay, take a partner and try it out.”

She just stands there. Waiting. And without giving sensei a chance to say something, Nick turns towards her, bowing, indicating that they’ll partner up. It makes her heart flutter a little bit.

Of course Rob and Chris partner up as well. Leaving sensei with one of the new ones. It kind of surprises her that he accepts it without a complain.

They do the exercise for five minutes before sensei tells them to stop and line up with two against the wall. Nick stands before her and sensei doesn’t react to it, instead he calls one of the new ones with him.

“Right, next one. We’re going to train our kicks today. You’re standing in front of your partner, and you’ll advance with a simple forward kick, mae geri, to the other end of the tatami, and then your partner comes back with the same kick.”

Freya takes the right distance for Nick to be able to still hit her and they advance over the mats. Once they are all back in their beginning position, sensei gives them another kick. She loves them all. Yoko geri, side kick. Uchiro geri, backward kick. Mawashi geri, roundhouse kick. Uramawashi geri, reversed roundhouse kick.

She bends down, hands on her knees, face directed to the ground, when sensei calls out ‘mate’ and starts explaining the mawashi geri. She can feel her hair falling before her, hiding her face from sight. And secretly she’s glad it does, because there are tears in her eyes. Without a reason. Just like last night, when she got into her bed. They were just there. Without a reason.

Nick doesn’t react. Perhaps because he knows she’s tired. Perhaps because he knows she hasn’t been training decently for a while and thinks she just has to catch her breath. Perhaps because he just hasn’t seen her face before she bend down.

Closing her eyes she feels one tear fall down on the mat, a couple more rolling down her cheeks still. Biting her lip, she bring her hand to her face, quickly brushing the tears away and standing up straight again. Nick is still watching sensei do the next kick. Deep down, she’s glad he hasn’t seen it. It would only result in concern and questions and she wouldn’t know what to tell him. Doesn’t know herself what exactly is wrong with her and why she is feeling like this and why she is reacting like this.

“Ready?”

She smiles and takes on her fighting stance when Nick turns towards her again. Trying to push down the feeling that are roaming through her body. Trying to ignore the thoughts in her head.

For a second he narrows his eyes. As if he has see, as if he knows. But then he kicks and Freya lets out a small and soft sigh of relief. She doesn’t want him to worry. There is nothing to worry about anyway…

-

“Training was nice.”

She nods and smiles when they cycle home together. “Yeah. It was indeed.” And she means it. Despite what suddenly happened halfway the training, the tears completely out of the blue, it was a nice training. They trained together the entire time. Not once did sensei pull them apart, and that kind of really surprised he. She didn’t complain though. And in truth, training further calmed her down and made the headache leave.

“And the weather is lovely. The first of May and the sun is shining brightly.”

His cheerfulness is catching and she chuckles softly.

“What do you think… Let’s go have a picnic in the park?”

Her eyes open wide and she looks aside. Catching the sparkles in his eyes.

“Yeah, I’d love to… But I thought you had plans this afternoon? Do you still have time for a picnic? Because I don’t want to rush…”

Nick shakes his head. “Just got a text message that Liam cancelled. Susan isn’t feeling well and he wants to take care of her.”

Freya nods. “Tell him to spoil her a little and wish her well.”

Quickly he takes his cell phone out of his pocket and types the message.

“Do you have enough for a picnic or should we go buy some things still?”

Biting her lips she mentally searches her kitchen and the fridge.

“I still have bread, cheese, lemonade, tomatoes, salad, mayo, eggs, chocolate, and probably some other things I’m forgetting right now. Normally I should have enough for a picnic.”

They turn the corner and lock their bikes before entering Freya’s apartment. She disappears into the kitchen, taking the food they’ll need, while Nick goes off searching for a blanket big enough for the both of them and a bag to place everything in.

They leave again ten minutes later. The company and the weather makes Freya whistle. And she smiles broadly when Nick takes her hand in his.

-

She’s lying on her back on the blanket spread out on the grass field, one arm under her head. Nick is lying on his back as well, his head resting on her belly, his hands on his own belly, holding Freya’s free hand.

“Heaven’s, the weather is really gorgeous.”

She hums in agreement and looks at him. He has his eyes closed, a smile on his face. Enjoying this. The sun, and being with her. And she does as well. She loves this. Being with him, just lying together, enjoying the sun on a lazy Saturday afternoon. It makes her smile.

“Hey.”

He turns his head and looks right into her smiling face.

“I love you.”

For a couple of seconds he just keeps looking at her, not saying a word. Before he raises himself, leaning over, and kissing her.

“I love you too.”

Her arms is still around his waist, holding him and he gently caresses her hair and face, before leaning in for another kiss.

Freya’s eyes are still closed when he pulls back again, an honest smile on her face. She’s feeling happy again. Normal again. Not as blue and down as last night. And even as this morning. She’s… back. If that makes any sense.

She opens her eyes again and reaches up to place another kiss on his lips.

“Thanks.”

Nick looks at her, surprised. “Why?”

She shrugs and lets her hand travel from his waist to his neck.

“Nothing I would be able to explain. Just… Thanks.”

He narrows his eyes but she just smiles and kisses him again.

-

“Oh, today was great. First training. Then the picnic. Then just being together with you.”

She moans softly when she feels how he wraps his arms around her waist and she immediately leans in into his embrace, letting her back rest against his chest.

“Yeah, today was awesome.”

Smiling he kisses her neck and she sighs in pleasure.

“With a chance to ruin the mood…”

She turns her head so she can look at him. Questioningly.

“Why thanks?”

Smiling she shakes her head, letting it rest against his shoulder.

“For today. I wasn’t feeling well last night and this morning. I wasn’t feeling, like myself… I was sad and down and lonely and angry. And I don’t know why. There was no reason. Not at all. And yet…”

She sighs and he tightens his hold on her a little. Kissing her temple.

“Training made me calm down again. The kicking was wonderful to get everything out of my system. And then spontaneously going on a picnic with you. The gorgeous weather. Just being with you…”

Freya looks at him again, sees the little sparks of worry in his eyes .

“You made me smile again. Made the sadness disappear. Made me feel like me again. Not down and not sad and not alone. So… Thanks.”

This time it’s Nick’s turn to shake his head.

“Don’t thank me for…”

Quickly she places her finger against his lips, cutting him off.

“I know. But I also want you to know that, just being with you – and I’m not even talking about the picnic, but just about training, and not actually even about that, but just in general – that being with you…”

For a second she bites her lips. Knowing she can’t voice all she’s feeling.

So instead she turns around in his embrace, letting her hands cup his face, and kisses him. Deeply. Trying to make him understand just how much he turned her word upside down. Trying to make him understand just how happy she is. Trying to make him understand just how he can always brighten even the darkest of days.

“I can’t explain. But…”

She giggles before she continues.

“It’s sappy and metaphorical, but you are my sunshine…”

Smiling he closes his eyes and shakes his head. “I think I do understand you. Just… Don’t thank me for…”

Nodding she tiptoes and kisses him again. “I know.”

There’s a pondering look on her face. It makes Nick look at her, questioningly.

“Let me rephrase it.”

Smiling she wraps her arms around his neck, letting her fingers tangle in his hair.

“I love you.”

He smiles in return and kisses her once again, his arms around her waist holding her close against him.

Yeah, that does sound like depression. If blessedly a lot shorter than nearly all depressive episodes.
