He betrayed them during the uprise. I still haven't figured everything out, but he was the reason the fighting started, the reason Nelly and Rafael and Timmy got captured, the reason Rafael got erased. And that is why he is so surprised they forgive him so easily... :-)
And yes, the joining of the King's guard was indeed done in an attempt to undermine the King.
