Alex tosses and turns in his bed. The blankets wrapped all around him.
“And that tyrant of a King should give power back to the people. We have our rights. And we will stand up for them!” Shouting out, even though it means there will be a fight. Shouting out, even though he knows it might ruin everything. Shouting out, and he means it. At that moment, he wants it all to fail...
He's groaning. Eyes fluttering and arms moving around wildly.
"Still so protective. Despite his betrayal? You're not even angry with him?" Surprise and pain and love and... Right at that moment, he wanted to die. Or at least hide. Turn back time and undo what he has done... But he couldn't.
His breathing is irregular and shallow.
"Your punishment. Forgetting... Everything. Everything but the fear." The look of surprise on Nelly's face, mirrored on his own. "And you. Leader. You'll be forgotten. Erased. Through time and space. Gone." Rafael's wide open eyes, Nelly's silent scream, and his soft whispered 'no'.
"Rafael. Rafael... Don't go..." A couple of tears roll down.
"Rafael." Still remembering. A smile. Running downstairs to see his brother. Mother standing in the kitchen. "Mum, have you seen..." Nothing more. Saying his brother's name, suddenly impossible. Looking around, only three chairs, three plates. Only three...
Screaming he wakes up. Panicked eyes looking around. Searching. Searching...
Prepared. Not scared. Not really. There was no warning when the magician entered his mind. Searching for any sign of betrayal. Or plans of betrayal. Searching for memories. Things he should have forgotten. Things he shouldn't remember. But he did. And they didn't find it. Long ago learned to control his own mind. Learned how to protect it.
He closes his eyes again, brushing away the tears, his head hurting like hell. Wondering why the nightmare continues now he's awake.
Fighting. Fists and legs, punches and kicks. Don't get hit. It was the only rule. “You’re in. We’ll give you your red cape this evening. When you are formally introduced to our King as new guard.”
Swallowing he stands up, opening the window, letting in the fresh air. All that time in the King's service. Wasted time with his mother and friends. And before. Locking himself up, beating himself up. So much guilt. And watching over Nelly.
The ring. Golden glow. Nelly's memories. And... "Rafael. You're back." His brother's arms around him. Holding him. A whisper. "You fool." But he's back. Warm. And alive. Back again. Everybody remembering.
"Alex?"
Turning around he sees his mother standing in the doorway.
"Are you alright? I heard you screaming..."
He smiles reassuringly. "Yeah. I just had a nightmare. But it's alright. He's back. It's alright..."
He turns back to the window, missing the look of surprise on his mother's face. He never told her about the betrayal. About his betrayal. He couldn't...
"Rafael."
The name escapes him without him realizing. And he hears his mother leave again. Knowing she's going downstairs, to the kitchen, to make him a cup of warm milk. It makes him smile.
"I'm sorry."
He has told his brother these words a thousand times since he got back. And every time Rafael shook his head. And Nelly smiled.
It's something Alex can't understand. How they can forgive him. How they could have forgiven him.
But they did. And he is eternally grateful for it...

And yes, the joining of the King's guard was indeed done in an attempt to undermine the King.
