They used to lie so close together, entwined in the sun. She lies beside him now in the dark, and feels the secrets between them, like a closed wound, infection bubbling under the skin.

She wants to reach out and drag them all into the light. How unhappy he is, how much he misses his children. How alone she feels, how cut off where once there was connection. She thinks-- if he can only see their daughter, if she can only feel his love-- if they can only burn out the infection, they will be happy.

She knows they can't.

Oh, man, this is sad, mainly because it's all turned out just like Arelie predicted it would if she didn't leave Farid. The guilt and anger over losing the kids to Fatimah is like a huge elephant in the room that won't ever go away.
