There is a sad smile on his face when he looks at his mother, standing in the kitchen, preparing dinner. She has aged. Since the Revolution. You can see it. She has become years older. Knowing her sons went fighting the King. It has aged her.

And despite the fact that she has forgotten all about it, she still looks old. Older than her years. Nobody notices it. Because everybody has forgotten it. But he knows. And he sees. Because he remembers.

Taking a deep breath he walks over to the kitchen. Waiting in the doorway, leaning against the doorpost, arms crossed in front of him. Just watching her. He knows his mother has heard him approach.

“Alex?”

A surprised look on her face when he suddenly puts his arms around her shoulders. Holding her close to him. His chin resting on her shoulder, his eyes closed.

He will not speak. He will not say what he so desperately wants to tell. But he will try and show her how much he loves her. How much it hurts. Just this simple hug. It’s all he can offer her. She will hate him tomorrow…

Without a word he lets go of her, walking away, without looking back. He had seen her smile. And that smile… He hopes it will keep him strong enough to get through with it, to get him through this.

Before he goes to the palace, he makes a little detour. Passing by Nelly’s house. Since Rafael was gone, he has always watched out for her. Watched over her. When he becomes a guard… He will not be able to.

I feel really bad for Alex, for being the only one who remembers anything about Rafael or what the king has done. It must be so hard for him. He can't even talk to anyone about it.

Things don't look too good for Alex! 8( It seems like he's breaking himself away from the people he protects and looks after. You've written this in a very sparse way, which I feel like it works for what you've written. I'm assuming that Alex is close with his mother, yet, throughout this, and especially the embrace, there feels like there is a disconnect for him (and the way you've used language and sentence structure conveys that). And it works well.

So hard to be the only one who remembers *hugs him* Even more so since it was because of him... well of course there's only the king to blame but I can imagine Alex blames himself.
