Mariko traced the outline of the woman on the left, trying to memorize the few details Gilboa had been able to put down on paper. It wasn’t much, but maybe she could—

“What are you doing in here, Dr. Anders?”

She jumped, and very slowly turned to face Dr. Lobell. “I had some concerns about Simon Gilboa. I wanted to look at some drawings he’d told me about.”

Lobell, annoyed, crossed over to her and took the picture of the house out of her hands. “That is confidential. And you shouldn’t be talking to him anyway.”

Mariko folded her arms and glared at him. “He speaks Archaic English, and I like to practice.” Besides, he needs someone talking to him who isn’t unnecessarily cruel.

“His environment needs to be controlled if I’m going to have any success in restoring his memories,” Lobell shot back.

She flinched and looked away. It was easier, with someone else to fight for—and, weirdly enough, Lux re-entering her life had helped as well—but she still didn’t like people looking directly at her scars.

“I disagree,” she said, as evenly as she could, “with your methods.”

Lobell sniffed. “You’re the wrong kind of doctor to comment on my methods.” He stepped to the side. “Don’t come into my office again, unless you actually need treatment for something. And stay away from my patients.”

Mariko clenched her fists, but she pushed past him and left.

On her way back to her own office, she focused on cementing the few details that were in the drawing. It was the only lifeline she had, and she was more determined than ever to get Gilboa as far away from Red Sky as she could.
