Notes: In which there is bonding time between Cody and her other self. It's been forever since i wrote in this verse but
alexconall asked for something in it and while I could not fit the prompt, I did do something within the verse.
People knew them as twins, as sisters who were closer than most but both of them knew the truth. They knew that Cody belongs while Cassia? She didn't. She never fit, not quite the way she should anyway, and the world was not built for her.
She came from a world of broken roads and blood loss, of light that burned and darkness that overtook the world when it came. She was not middle ground, or evening light. She didn't know the meaning of peace.
But she was sweet in her way, unbroken by the world she’d been from. Yet she was unprepared for the one she found herself in now. She was trusting when she should have been shrewd and jagged edges when she needed to be soft. She forgot how to operate under normal circumstances because normal was never something she learned how to be.
Cody watched her, studied how she reacted to things. It was strange, seeing the ways she could have been, the life she cold have lead. They exchange stories at night, stories of the roads and the things they meet there and some of the things Cassia encountered never ceased to amaze her.
Cody ran into strange things too, fae and spirits and things that were beyond names. Cassia ran into tricksters and demons and creatures out to steal what little she had left. Cody knew hardship but it felt like her ‘sister’ didn't know anything but.
They sat in a diner, eating pie and drinking coffee that they bought with stolen money. Neither of them said anything for a while, both enjoying their spoils until Cody finally spoke.
“Cas,” she started, her voice uncertain. “What’re you gonna do if...If you find a way back home. You gonna go?”
The other girl shrugged, poking at her pie, unsure of what to say. “I don’t know,” she admitted after a moment. “Maybe. Feel like I gotta go, like...like I have a responsibility to the universe, you know?”
“No,” Cody admitted. She didn't understand that line of thinking at all. Cas didn't owe the universe anything. It fucked her over and she saw no reason why she should go back at this point. Yet she knew Cassia would see it differently knew that she would have some fleeting obligation to the world she left behind.
“It’s hard to explain,” she started, choosing her words carefully. “It’s...I feel like if I go back, I might get everything that I've forgotten. Like a reward for returning home. I...Want that. I want to fill in the gaps.”
Cody sighed, closing her eyes. “I get that, I do. having that stuff gone has to be horrible but you can’t risk everything just for that. You can’t throw way safety for something that you might not even get. You were gonna die over there, Cas. Do you really want to go back to that?”
Cassia bit her lip, looking at her pie,. “I don’t know, maybe.”
Cody clenched her fists and grit her teeth, forcing herself to remain calm. Its not in hr nature to not react with force but she was trying, knowing full well that it would force Cas into running if she did. Her other self hated seeing Cody explode and it always made her more nervous and prone to flights.
“It doesn't even matter,” Cas said, catching Cody’s expression and her attempt to keep calm. “It really doesn't. Nothing’s gonna get me back there right now anyway. It’s a non-issue.”
Cody just nodded, having to admit that she was right about that. Nothing they knew at the moment could get her back and that in Cody’s mind, wasn't’t a bad thing. She’d grown used to her other self, grown comfortable with her. Even as she regained memories and learned who she was, Cody found herself growing more and more fond of her.
It would be hard to see her go, in no small part because she would be alone again.
“You’re pie is getting cold,” Cas pointed out then, nudging the pie towards Cody. That made her smile a little and she nodded, taking a bite and looking out at the dark roads they’d soon be traveling on.
“Something’s waiting for us out there,” Cody muttered, watching the sky.
“I know," Cas agreed. “But it won’t kill us. Not yet anyway.”
Cody arched an eyebrow and studied the girl. “Oh? What makes you say that.”
Cas just grinned. “That’s not how the story goes. We don't die in the middle of it. We gotta see it through until the end.”
Cody laughed, shaking her head. ”And who’s to say that the end doesn't have a fiery pit in it or something.”
“It doesn't,” Cas assured. “If we’re going to die, it’s not going to be that easy.”
“How do you know?”
“There are lots of things you haven't met yet, Codes. Things that I have. I think that’s why I’m here, why I don’t think we’ll find a way to get me back any time soon either. There’s still stuff you gotta learn.”
“And you’re my teacher then?”
Cassia shook her head. “Not exactly. I’m along for the ride but I’m not the one who tells you where to go. That’s the road's job.”
“So we just follow the roads then?”
“Like we always do.”
“And what if the roads lead us straight to hell?”
“Then we go there with smiles and hope that it’s as interesting as the books make it out to be.”
Cody laughs, a grin on her face as she finishes off her pie and takes a swig from her coffee cup. “You really are me, aren't you.”
Cassia grinned back, winking and lifting her cup. “TO the roads and wherever they might take us this time."
They bumped glasses and drank, both of them ready and waiting to see what the night had prepared for them this time.
“To the road then?” Cody asked.
“To the road.” Cassia agreed and with that, they left a handful of bills on the table an starts for the door.

I really need to poke these two more often. I quite enjoy them and their oddness. Cassia is...I'm honestly not sure. I'm winging it with her and it's....kind of odd. I like her though and her ambiguity.

And Celty being a character I very much enjoy reading about, we'll call this a double cheeseburger of yes.
