The SUV was filled with weird stuff. The back had a bunch of liquor boxes, some of which had "LAB" written on them; others were taped shut and labeled "FRAGILE", smelling like gasoline and orange juice. There was a set of what looked like uniforms, and a set of camping gear.

"I need to find my friend," was the first thing out of Peace's mouth. As soon as he'd gotten an eyeful of the car, he started glancing nervously around out the windows.

"Your friend?" said the guy, who smelled oddly like a flowering tree. He looked at Peace and extended his hand. "Kevin. By the way."

"Peace." They shook. "My friend- well- I don't know if we're friends, but he let me sleep in his apartment, and he's out here somewhere, and I can't just let him get hurt!"

"Okay..." He seemed to take that in stride, which was probably good, for a dream snake guy. "Do you have any idea where he is?"

Peace hesitated for a moment, then hit the button for the window. He stuck his head out and tried to calm his racing heart and tap into the wolf-ness in a more subtle way. He'd only figured this out the previous night and by accident, so it took a minute, but soon enough, he caught the scent, though it was soft and far away.

"Uhm, he's that direction," Peace said, pointing. Kevin was snickering with the same huge grin as before. "What?"

"Nothing. All right, lead the way." He slowed down only slightly and made a remarkably swift left turn.

"So were you the snake?"

"Yeah. I'm a snake kinda guy."

"Is..." Peace wasn't sure how to ask the question in his mind. "So why are you a snake if I'm a wolf?"

"Huh?" He glanced at Peace. "I'm a wolf, too."

"Oh." Peace sat back and put his seatbelt on. They headed on down the street, somewhat less crazy; Peace stuck his head out the window. It was still roughly the way they were going.

"So-"

Kevin was about to say, at the same moment Peace said: "-Okay that didn't actually make any sense. To me. Sorry." Kevin shook his head slightly.

"You're new to this?"

"Uhm... yeah. I'm just kind of taking it on faith that you know what's going on. I hope that's why- uhm, turn left here I think?- you wanted to see me."

"I was actually hoping for some help with these monsters, but I'm sure I can trade you some information for the job."

"Oh! Sure," Peace said. "Yeah, god, these things, they're everywhere. I've just been trying to keep them away from people when I see them, but I'd love s-"

They both saw it at the same time: a tall, glowing figure advancing on one of the monsters, slicing its head off with one clean sweeep using a white thing that looked vaguely like a sword. Kevin hit the brakes and came to a rolling stop. They watched for a moment as the figure danced, swiftly but awkwardly, between creatures, moving too fast for the scattered creatures remaining to get near it.

"Well." Kevin puffed. "That... is a good reason why this is going to get out."

"Get out?" Peace said, glancing at Kevin.

"The story." He scratched the back of his neck.

"...Are we supposed to be being subtle?" Peace grimaced.

"Nnnot if it means people are gonna die."

The figure sliced out a chunk of a building as if it were made of foam, then used the flat of the sword-thing as a baseball bat, smacking the chunk of sheet rock into a creature's chest in a bloody mess. As Peace watched, it (he?) looked almost like he was being be yanked around by the thing.

"You know, I hope that's your friend," Kevin said. "And that those aren't people."

"I guess I should look."

Peace got out of the car and walked over to the figure. It seemed to ignore him.

"Uhm... Dmitry?"

The glowing figure- it was Dmitry under the light- didn't respond. Slowly, Peace walked closer, calling his name louder.

"Dmitry!"

Peace edged ever closer; Dmitry turned and walked around him, clearly looking for more creatures, so it wan't as if Dmitry didn't even see him... Gingerly, deeply worried both for and about the other man, Peace poked Dmitry in the shoulder.

That woke him up. He turned around in a whirl, eyes glazed, nearly dropping the sword; it clinked against the ground rather than slicing through. The glow faded out, most of it quickly, though a soft purplish afterglow remained for a few seconds.

"Owwww." Dmitry shook out his arms, wincing.

"Dmitry?" Peace looked into Dmitry's eyes, and he looked up into Peace's. "What the hell happened to you?"

His jaw dropped; the expression on his face was raw, but not something Peace could quite place. "Ah... I... I don't..."

Meanwhile, Kevin had stepped out. "Hey. You two all right?"

Dmitry's head snapped to look; he winced, and rubbed his neck. "Ow. Ah... yeah. Just really tired." He sighed. "And covered in blood, holding a sword, in a field of bodies. I'm fucking brilliant."

"Okay, well, if you're yourself, can we talk about this as we go? There are way better answers to whatever questions I'm sure everybody has where I'm going."

"Shit..." Dmitry sighed. "All right. But I need to return someone's credit card."

"Later, please?" Kevin said. "No more errands. Sorry."

"Stupid fucking monsters," Dmitry growled. Kevin popped one of the back seats up, and Dmitry curled up on it like he wanted to take a nap.

Not like they can use the credit card for a while. Also, I really love this installment. Kevin may be my new favorite, he's just so... yes.
