Lawn Green #6/Camo Green #12, Dirt Brown #23

Name: Greenling
Story: All Great Things
Colors: Lawn Green #6 (lawn chair)/Camo Green #12 (weapons), Dirt Brown #23 (Strength)
Supplies and Styles: Paint by Numbers (nothing will bring us on our knees again)
Word Count: 873
Rating: PG13ish
Warnings: Mild violence and horror stuff.
Summary: The plot moves forward. The next morning, Dmitry leaves to help some people and gets predictably caught in something terrible, but then stuff happens. There is, sadly, a hole in the middle of this fic, and it needs some editing, but it's mostly joiner stuff and a lot happens on either side.

Comments, criticism, and questions are all appreciated.

Peace was still asleep well after Dmitry woke up. He had slept facedown in the pillow; his shirt and shoes were neatly put up by the bed, his jacket was hung, and as far as Dmitry could tell, his scratches had completely healed. Curious (and because Peace had decided to sleep on top of the blankets), he'd glanced at the wound in his side, which was fading. It currently looked like it had scarred over with normal flesh, leaving a black ring around it. It was around eight in the morning, and Dmitry was already busy making coffee and breakfast for himself. His laptop was sitting on the counter, and he was flipping through news sites and blogs in between sips.

The rest of the world was catching on slowly; the local news had some bland pieces on assaults that sounded similar, none of which seemed to have interviews or much in the way of details. There was more on the wider internet, but he wasn't really hooked up to local blogs or the like, so the best he could find were second-hand reports and a lot of skeptical discussion. It bothered him that he couldn't tell what the extent of the problem was. He would've expected someone to try to minimize it and quell panic, at least, or put forth an explanation that didn't involve... whatever was actually going on. It was probably incompetence, but at this point, it could mean anything.

Dmitry growled under his breath, switching away from what he had been reading to check his email. The oven gave a low buzz, so he took out the biscuits and got the bacon pan ready for gravy. Peace was still snoozing- Dmitry felt profoundly justified in saying the guy had needed a good night's sleep- so when he was done, he sat in his desk chair and quietly had breakfast.

He was just about snoozing himself, empty plate in his lap, when he heard a knock on the door. It was so soft, that at first, he wasn't sure it was a knock on his door, but soon he heard the sounds of whispered conversation and a second knock.

-
(Tiny summary of portion removed for editing: the people in Dmitry's apartment building are gathered in the hallway trying to secure the place. One of them suggests supplies and after some discussion, Dmitry decides to leave. After ducking a few monster-things, he comes upon another group of people being attacked and beats a monster over the head with a lawn chair.)
-

They were backed up nearly to the door; the older guy dropped his shovel and made a run for it. The other melee guy bodychecked a monster trying to go after him and got bit deeply in the forearm for his trouble, but Dmitry thought quickly, ducked behind him, grabbed the shovel, and just as one of the creatures was about to go for it, stepped up and whirled the shovel around hard enough to smack them both. Unfortunately this also knocked the other guy down, but he scrambled up from under the now-unconscious attacking creature and backed up himself.

Dmitry could hear some cheering from inside. "Good one! Come on, get in here!" said shotgun guy holding the door.

One of the creatures was circling around Dmitry, looking for an opening; the remaining one went for the window, causing screams from inside. Another shot of reckless energy hit Dmitry: there were children in there. Without thinking, he made a decision.

"I have things to do!" Dmitry shouted back. "But I'll take the shovel!"

He lunged at the creature going for him with a heavy swipe; it jumped back just far enough, and he took off running.

He was only halfway down the block before it started catching up, and he could see another one coming for him from down the street with claws bared. Swearing, barely dodging a swipe, he ducked between two buildings for a breather, hoping he could, just maybe, take them out before any more joined in. His adrenaline was still running high, but he wasn't sure he was going the right direction, and he knew that when he crashed he would be pretty useless, especially with the wiggly feelings growing in his arms from the shovel impacts.

The alley ended in a small, water-damaged brick wall; it was a dead end. Good for him, fewer surprises. He backed up, facing the creature again and swiping at it. It backed up, then tried to lunge again; he swung at it, and the blow connected, knocking it hard in the chest, but the solid blow knocked him backwards, and he tripped into a pile of trash.

The creature paused a moment, making an inhuman yowl- but just before he rolled to his feet, Dmitry's attention was caught by a flash of soft colorful light.

His eyes led up, to a flat shaft of solid white metallic stuff; where the sun hit it, it seemed to absorb the light and refract it into its own inner glow. Marks had been carved into it, irregular, as if made by a thin stick in soft clay. His breath caught in his throat, feeling- almost to his terror- the surge of emotion that preceded one of his blackouts. The world slowed down for a moment.

His hand went to it, reaching for the top where it narrowed into what might have been a handle; he had just enough time to see the two creatures descending on him as he yanked it out, starting to roll to his feet, before he lost consciousness.

Yeah, I think Dmitry's normal life is definitely over. Curious what happened at the end. I wonder what the connection is with everything that's going on and what's happening to Dmitry.

Oh, dear, something horrible did happen. Dmitry does seem very good at thinking on his feet though! He should survive. And kiss Peace.

I VOTE FOR GRATUITOUS AMOUNTS OF KISSING.

Because happy queer people, that's why.

This seems appropriate! I am usually very happy.

I'll pitch in and write gratuitous boykissing myself, if it helps. Theo and Hector have been demanding more makeouts anyway.
