The house was freezing. Celeste checked the thermostat in the hallway, but the heat was on. She swore under her breath as she turned it up, kicking her heels off under her jacket by the front door.

As she passed through the hallway, she heard what sounded like a keyboard clattering from Bethany's office and smiled. Celeste hadn't expected her to be home so early in the evening, but it was a nice surprise.

"I'm home," she called, not wanting to disturb her. "Just going to take a bath."

She felt another chill in the air, or running down her spine. When she got into the bedroom, she got together a change of clothes, but then an idea occurred to her. She smirked, heading into the kitchen for a bottle of wine, then headed back into the office.

The door was cracked, but not open, so she knocked; there was no immediate answer.

The bottle fell from her grasp, rolling under a table somewhere outside her awareness. The chair, and the floor under it, were a mass of red. An arm, and a tangle of curly black hair, were just visible enough to tell her what had happened.

Celeste heard a hiss, and glanced up.

Lizard paws; hair shimmering in bright orange-violet-gray; eyes like fire, eyes like thunder.

She was out the door before she had time to think, and before she could tell if it had followed her.

Oh, what a horrible thing to come home to! I hope Celeste managed to get away.

Oh, jesus, poor Celeste. I think she made the right choice in running, but this has to be just... the worst thing to ever happen to her.
