Ed stared at the ceiling as Emma’s book rested on his stomach. Everything in the book explained his recent behavior clearly. He felt silly at the obvious way he acted. It put many things in his mind to rest except coming up with a way to tell Sam. He wondered if the book had a plan for that.
Ed took the book off his stomach and placed it on the bed as he turned on his side. Emma made it sound so easy. He would go tell Sam and nothing would change. Then again, if he was honest with himself things already started changing between him and Sam. From Sam keeping an extra towel in his locker for him after gym to the way he gave Sam cough drops when the weather changed. They were a couple and he didn’t notice it.
No wonder Emma gave me these books. I’m surprised she didn’t tell me sooner or she did and I didn’t notice it. Ed turned on his back and placed his pillow over his face. He wondered who else saw, but didn’t say anything. He didn’t get teased, but he had a feeling Emma was behind that. Out of everyone in their little group, no one wanted to cross her.
Ed thought back at all the times he spent with Sam, but stopped at the knock on his door. He moved the pillow off his face and sat up. “Come in!”
His grandmother, Molly, opened the door and walked in his room. “Hi Eddy, I wonder if you wanted to come with me to the store.”
“Hi grandma, I don’t mind. Do you want me to drive?”
“I’ll let you choose.”
“I can do it, but I’ve only had my license for a month.”
“I’m sure you’re a fine driver. Let’s go.”
Ed grinned as he got off his bed and picked up his sweatshirt on his way out the door.
*~*~*
Ed tried to keep his mind clear on the way to the store, but he couldn’t. He wondered when his feelings started to show and when he started to hide everything. He wondered if Emma gave Sam the same books or something different. Ed let his mind wander a bit at the stop light as he tapped his fingers against the steering wheel.
“Are you excited for senior year?” Molly asked.
“Hmm, yeah I can’t wait.” Ed said absently.
Molly frowned. “Is everything alright? You didn’t have another fight with Sam, did you?”
Ed shook his head. “No, not this time.”
“That’s good. I hope you two don’t fight too much this year.”
“I’ll try not to.”
“Eddy, I know there’s something on your mind. What is it?”
“Um, it’s nothing grandma.”
“Are you sure?”
Ed could see his grandma’s knowing smile out the corner of his eye before he looked back at the road. “Um, well, it’s complicated.”
“Hmm, how complicated is it?”
“It’s very complicated because I don’t know what to do about it.”
“I’m sure telling someone you like them isn’t as complicated as you think.”
Ed didn’t know how he made it to the parking lot without swerving into anything. He stopped the car and stared at his grandma in disbelief. “Do you know too?”
Molly smiled. “Ed, I’ve seen a lot in my old age. I think I would know if my grandson has a crush on someone.”
Ed bit his lip. “Even if it wasn’t on a girl,”
“As long as that person made you happy, then I’m happy. Besides, I’m sure Sam will make you happy, but you don’t know if you don’t try.”
Ed pressed his forehead against the steering wheel. “I can’t believe I was so obvious! I, um, didn’t mean to come out this way. You won’t tell anyone, will you?”
Molly shook her head. “That’s for you to do.”
Ed nodded. “Okay, um, when did you notice?”
“The time you had a fight with Sam and you were miserable for two weeks. When you fight with him, it always seemed different than when you fought with your other friends. I always knew when you two made up because you were happy again. There were also the pictures you took when we went on vacation, the times you text him when we’re on the road, you always call him before we get on the plane, the--”
Ed held up his hands in defeat. “Alright, I get it, I was obvious.”
Molly laughed and ruffled his hair. “You were. Are you going to do something about it?”
“I want to, but what if I mess this up?”
“I’ve seen Sam when he comes over. I don’t think you’re going to be messing anything up.”
“Isn’t it too early? We’re just in high school.”
“I met your grandfather in high school and we got married soon after. I don’t think it’s too soon sweetie, but it can always be too late.” Molly said as she smiled sadly at the bracelet around her wrist.
Ed rubbed the back of his neck as he bit his lip. “Grandma…I’m sorry I--”
Molly shook her head. “No, no the therapist said it’s good for me to talk about him. It’s been a year after all.”
Ed sat back in his seat and looked at the letters of the store. “Yeah.”
Molly hummed and adjusted her bracelet. “So, if you’re out of excuses, are you going to ask him?”
Ed nodded. “I am. Grandpa always said don’t wait, right?”
Molly smiled and kissed his cheek. “Right,”
Ed grinned as he squeezed her hand.
“Are you ready to go?” Molly asked.
Ed nodded as he placed the keys in his pocket. “Ready.”
