Summary: She sings to keep the hounds at bay.

She sings until her voice goes raw, until she can’t shove sounds out from between her teeth and tongue.

It hurts.

But she does it because there are some nights when it’s just the two of them, or they’ve picked up a straggler with no place to call home, and her voice is the only thing that keeps the dogs away. It’s what keeps them safe when the night falls and the sun is gone but the hounds are hunting

She sings for safety, weaving old love songs together to form a safe place, a shelter for them to hide in the night. It’s not perfect, its not even really there half the time, but it’s something. She can give them something and that’s what matters.

Gabriel cooks and cleans hat he can, he takes care of them in the mundane ways. She takes care of them in the ways that mean she keeps them safe from hunters, both dogs and otherwise. She defends them with her songs, singing away the enemy with power she never asked for.

And they survive that way. They survive on raw voices and scraps they find. They survive when other people haven’t. They survive because they don’t know how to do anything else.

They survive and in the morning, when she can, she sings to the sunrise.

I really like the imagery of singing holding back so much horror, and even though this looks like grim times, there's still something maybe a little bit hopeful about it?

This is cool. I've always wondered what songs people would remember in an iPod-less post-apocalyptic scenario. Terrible pop music would probably become, like, old folk tunes.

Anyways, the vibe of this one is really nice.

Oh, how beautiful. I really like the description, and also the symbolism; that it's the arts that keep us human.
