Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
Nolani turned away from the window. "What was that?"
Lonura smiled a little sadly at her. "I asked if you're bored of me already. You've barely said a word to me the last three days."
Nolani flushed. She wasn't, not quite yet. Lonura had only been her favorite for about three weeks. Even Esuri had lasted nearly twice that long, and most lasted at least three months. "No, Lony, I'm not. I promise, I'm just..."
Lonura got up off the bed and came behind her, taking her hand and squeezing it lightly. "Have you been having nightmares again...?"
The nightmares were rare now, but when they did come, she needed her favorites to understand and back off and let her cry for a little while. That was why she'd told Esuri to leave--she'd picked him because he had the prettiest eyes in her circle, and was always good at making her laugh. But he'd been impatient when she woke up crying, remembering Ulore's dead face and the way the room had smelled for weeks after the fight, and she couldn't let him stay close anymore.
She shook her head. "I'm worried about him."
Lonura knew right away who she meant. "I don't think the King would have sent him if he didn't think he could handle it," she said.
"I know. But...he was supposed to be out of the city weeks ago. We should have heard something by now."
"I'm sure he's fine," Lonura insisted. "Isshiri's a lot more mature than you give him credit for."
"He's just barely into his wildfire years," Nolani said. "I'm scared he got himself into the wrong person's office and..."
"You could ask Kirana."
"I did," Nolani said, turning back to the window. "She said she couldn't tell me anything."
"Well, there's your answer. He's fine."
Nolani shook her head again. "Then why didn't Kira tell me that straight out? She's only that kind of vague if she's seen something that would cause more problems if I stopped and I would stop and not listen to the reasons why it has to happen if he were in trouble. Something's happened to him, or going to happen to him, and...I can't be there to save him this time, so when it does happen he'll be all alone and--"
"You need to give your brother a little more credit than that," Lonura cut her off. "If you keep saving him from every problem he gets into, he'll never find his control, let alone learn how to protect himself."
A part of her knew Lony was right. But most of her was jumping up and down screaming that Isshiri needed her and to hell with Lony's sense. "...maybe I could try writing Kirana again."
Lonura let go of her hand, and started rubbing hers shoulders, trying to soothe her. "Maybe she'll be able to tell you more this time."
"I'll write Riluke, too," Nolani said, a little more decisively. "We know the Islands are increasing their patrols on Feredar's water-borders. She might know something, and she'd probably be more willing to talk than Kira."
Lonura didn't answer that directly. "I'm sure in a few weeks, you'll hear from Isshiri and he'll have all kinds of too-exciting stories about his adventures."
"I hope so." Nolani leaned back to rest her cheek against Lonura's. I'd better. No matter what Kira and Riluke and Lony say, I can't wait much longer without knowing he's safe.

Lonura is very sensible, yes, which is exactly what Nolani needs right now.
