Alene turned over in bed, frowning when she didn’t feel the arm around her waist. She opened her eyes and noticed that the spot next to her was empty. A trend that happened since the war ended. She got out of bed and slipped on the dark green robe she draped over the chair earlier that night. Alene slid her fingers through her hair, untangling some knots as she walked out the door. She stared sadly at the light, coming from the cracked door to Bernard’s office.

Since everything wrapped up last week, Bernard disappeared in his study after dinner every night. It didn’t go unnoticed by Alene or his friends, but she knew Bernard would deny everything behind his smile. As much as he tried he couldn’t push Alene away.

Alene hesitated for a bit before he knocked on the door and waited for an answer. She sighed in relief from the voice on the other side.

“Yeah?”

“Bernard, it’s me. Do you mind some company?”

“…You can come in. I don’t mind.”

Alene opened the door and closed it behind her. Bernard sat at his desk with a puzzle in front of him and a cup of tea next to him.

At least it’s a puzzle, if there was a model train in front of him I would have to call in some help. Alene bit her lip at the tired smile on the once energetic man before her.

“Hey,”

“Hi,” Alene gave a small smile and walked over to him. She took a seat on the arm of the chair and placed her hand on his shoulder. Bernard tugged on the sleeve of her robe until Alene settled in his lap. He wrapped an arm around her waist and tapped the puzzle piece against the desk. Alene watched Bernard try a few pieces before he stopped and stared at the puzzle again. She slid her fingers through his hair, noticing the untrimmed locks.

Alene squeezed his shoulder and looked at the puzzle again. It surprised her when Bernard cleared his throat.

“…Axel’s funeral is in a few days.”

“It is, who’s going to speak?”

“Daisuke, his brothers, and I’m going to say a few words.”

Alene nodded as she rubbed his arm. “That will be nice. Do you know what Claire will be doing after the funeral? What about Seth?”

“I offered her a place to stay here, but she declined. She doesn’t mind if Seth stays with us for awhile though.”

Alene nodded. “It’ll be good for him not to be alone.”

“Yeah,”

They fell into silence again as Bernard tried to fit a piece in the corner. He pulled it back when it didn’t fit and searched for another spot. “How are our kids adjusting?”

“They’re fine during the day, but at night they sleep in the den on the first floor. They’re getting better though, Michelle doesn’t scream during the night, Bello doesn’t accidently set things on fire, and Adam can go to the library without Kia. I have to remind them that the kidnappers aren’t coming back before bed, but I need the reminder too.”

Bernard’s fingers tightened around the piece. “Are they sleeping well? Should I go down there and check on them?”

“We can. I didn’t get a message from Antonio or the others, but it still wouldn’t hurt to check.”

“Okay, we can do that because I’m not getting anywhere with this.” Bernard gestured to the puzzle and placed the piece down on the desk. “You know I’ve been working on this for an hour and I’m not even half way done.” He sighed and leaned against her. “Maybe I should stop for awhile, until I can figure out the rest.”

“Are we still talking about the puzzle?”

Bernard chuckled. “Always able to read my mind, are you sure you’re not a psychic?”

Alene smiled. “Positive, I just know the way you think. Do you want some time with your thoughts?”

“I’ve had enough time with them. I want to spend time with you and the kids before I’m called for another council meeting.” Bernard shivered at the thought. Alene kissed his hair and rubbed his arm. “Can’t you take some time off?”

“I’m allowed two weeks, but there are still some things I have to do though before I can call it a true vacation. It’s always something to do, always someone to call, someone to check on, treaties to check, and it just keeps going.” Bernard sighed. He closed his eyes and leaned against her. “Sometimes I wish I wasn’t a leader.”

Alene’s heart twisted at the whispered confession. He’s still guilty about so many things that wasn’t his fault. She wiped the tear that rolled down his cheek and tipped his head up to stare in her eyes. She gave a small smile as she stroked his cheek. “You keep forgetting that I’m here. Not to mention the people that are on your side. Al, Antonio, Daisuke, Spade, Alec, Castor, and that’s only in Alu. You don’t have to take care of so many things by yourself. Remember, we’re here to help you and we always will.”

Bernard smiled as a few more tears rolled down his cheeks. “How did I get you again?”

Alene returned it as she wiped the tears away with the sleeve of her robe. “By being the amazing guy you are.” She placed a gentle kiss on his lips as Bernard pulled her close. It didn’t feel like the mechanical kiss he gave her throughout the week. It felt like Bernard again and she couldn’t be happier.

Bernard broke the kiss slowly and turned to the clock. “I think it’s time we checked on the kids.”

Alene nodded. “Okay.” She got out of his lap and offered her hand.

Bernard got out of his seat and took Alene’s hand, linking their fingers together. Hand in hand, they walked to the first floor den and peaked inside at the kids spread out across the room.

They walked in and adjusted some pillows and blankets. Alene pulled the blanket over Angelique and Michelle while Bernard adjusted Enzi’s pillow. Alene tucked Bello’s blanket around him as Bernard moved Chris from one of the chairs to the sofa. Alene fixed Adam and Kia’s pillow as Bernard eased the heavy book out of Adam’s arms.

They checked on the kids one more time before they walked out the room.

“So, do you want to go back to bed?” Alene asked.

Bernard shrugged. “I’m not really tired, but if you are I don’t mind.”

“I’m fine. Is there something you wanted to do?”

“Besides trying to finish that puzzle, nothing much.”

“We can make some popcorn and watch a movie.”

“All right we can do that.”

Alene turned to Bernard with a small frown at the indifference in his voice. She gently took his hands and squeezed them. “We can do anything you want, just tell me what it is.”

Bernard looked down at the tile on the floor and bit the inside of his cheek. “…Anything?”

Alene squeezed his hands again. “Yes, anything.”

“…Can you hold me? I just need to make sure that we’re alright and you’re here with me. Damn this sound weird to me, I mean, does that sound weird?” Bernard stammered as he rubbed the back of his neck and looked around the room.

Alene gave a gentle smile and kissed his cheek. “No, that’s not weird we can do that.”

Bernard relaxed as he hugged her and whispered in her hair. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Alene gave him another kiss before she linked their fingers together and walked back to their room.

Alene knew that the road ahead would have some bumps along the way, but they would be able to weather it together. She would make sure that never changed.
