Summary: Mitchell spots a group of pixies.

Mitchell lay in the thick grass, chin resting on his forearms. In front of him, underneath the blackberry bush, a group of pixies harvested the fruit. Occasionally a few of them would dart towards him, and one had come within arms reach and chattered at him, but he understood their language no more than they understood his.

He didn't look up when muffled footsteps approached. "This doesn't look like research," Broker said.

"This is a break," Mitchell murmured. The pixies continued to ignore him. "Did Cecilia tell you anything useful?"

"Not directly. She shouldn't be alive anymore than the dragon should." Broker sat next to him, cross-legged. "Are you... harassing a bunch of fairies?"

"I'm not bothering them." One of the blackberries fell and rolled towards him. "I don't think."

"You're just. Watching them." Broker leaned forward. "They're only fairies. Don't tell me you've never seen one before."

Mitchell shrugged. "Not often. Not like this. There's a nest in my apartment building but they stay out of sight." He frowned. "Except the one that screws up my computer."

Broker chuckled. "You haven't spent much time outside Krixos, have you?" Mitchell shook his head. "City-boy. I used to see these guys all the time when I was a kid."

"You grew up in the middle of nowhere," Mitchell said with a grin. "What else is there to do?"

"Hey, it was a nice little town. Quiet. It was a good place to grow up."

Mitchell twisted around to face Broker. A sadness had fallen over him, an unhappy smile and a wistful gaze. "Do you go back there?"

Broker's expression closed off. "No. Nothing to go back to." He stood abruptly. "Come on. The sooner we get this done, the sooner you can go back to your lattes and street-cars."

Mitchell ignored the obvious bait. "That little cafe down the street makes pretty decent coffee. Not bad for the middle of nowhere."

Broker plastered on his salesman smile. "It's crap and you know it."

I like how naturally the supernatural elements are put in. :)

That's a lot of fun to do sometimes. You can really experiment at that point.

This is a nice scene between the two of them--it's just a lazy, average day and they're just making some conversation, but there's warmness to it that I like.

*snerk* Mitchell, pixie stalker. I like it. And I really like the way you managed to twist the mood of the story from peaceful whimsy to pain.
