“You know, you don’t actually have to kidnap him to get his attention.”
Once again, Zita had found herself talking to the dragon who kept on kidnapping her boyfriend. She had sent him off to pick some apples from their garden as soon as she saw the tell-tale plumes of smoke that told her that he was nearby.
The dragon, who had never really revealed his name, tilted his head sideways as it peered at the woman before him. “But he would never pay attention to me otherwise.”
She sighed, uncertain of how to make it clear that kidnapping someone was not proper courting behavior. It wasn’t that she minded that the dragon liked her boyfriend, but she did mind rudeness and she thought kidnapping was beyond rude.
“To be honest, Dragon, it is not only rude and disrespectful toward Kostya to kidnap him, but I have lots of other duties because of my powers and I would rather not have to drop everything I am doing to rescue him just because you want his attention! It’s very annoying that you not only have to take him, but also brainwash him and make him do things for you! I like it when he’s not a threat to people, thank you very much.” Finished with her tirade, Zita put her hands on her hips and stared down the dragon.
If dragons could pout, this one would be pouting.
Zita sighed. “I know, I know, you think he belongs to you. You’re a dragon. Hording is your thing, but people aren’t gold and jewels, you know. Maybe instead of taking him, you can give him pretty things instead.”
“You mean, he’d like some of my horde?”
“Maybe? Ask him if there’s anything he’d like. Actually, that’s a thing you should learn. How to communicate. Talking is a thing that works as long as you’re honest.”
The dragon looked thoughtful.
“Would you mind if I talked to him?”
It was, of course, at this very moment that Kostya came back with the apples he had picked. Zita heard the basket he was carrying fall to the ground with a dull thud and then panicked footsteps as he ran away from the dragon. She sighed and said, “Well, I think you might have to wait a while for that.”
With that, Zita turned to leave so she could reassure Kostya that he was safe from the dragon. After all, it seemed to be inclined to listen to her this time, but she might as well keep him near her until she was certain.
