Summary/Notes: If Mitchell could rewrite his life. The format here is kind of an experiment; feedback is welcome. For my Lint Roller, prompt provided by kay_brooke: "Mitchell Pathing, if you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?"


Tam knocked on the doorframe. Mitchell glared up from his desk. "Kinda busy, Tam."

"What do you want for dinner? Mom's going to be home soon.", but when he saw her face -- forced steel precipitating an explosion -- he abandoned his coursework and stood up.

"What happened?"

"Mom was in an accident. She's fine," Tam said, "but she's going to be with the Healers for a few days."

Mitchell's stomach dropped in the silence. "She's okay, though, right?" When she didn't answer Mitchell shook her shoulder. "Right?"

"She's hurt, but the Grove has her. She'll be okay."

"Mitch," Tam said, staring him in the face, mouth forming and reforming words that didn't quite come.

"She's fine," Tam said.

"She's dead," Tam said.
