“Hello?”
Charlotte stepped out of the library. Someone was in the house.
“Jean Luc?”
Charlotte went to the stairs. On the landing stood a dark haired woman dressed in a stately violet gown trimmed with gold. She looked up.
“Can I help you?” Charlotte asked hesitantly.
The woman smiled.
“I’m Elisabetta; I’m Jean Luc’s mother.”
Charlotte blushed. She should have realized this.
Elisabetta made her way up the stairs. She had a certain presence about her.
She stopped in front of Charlotte and smiled. She leaned forward suddenly and pressed a kiss against Charlotte’s cheek.
“We haven’t met yet. I couldn’t make it to the capital for the wedding, but my husband assures me it was beautiful.”
Charlotte nodded.
Elisabetta reached for Charlotte’s hand.
“So tell me how are you finding married life?”
“Well I…,” Charlotte hesitated. She wasn’t sure what to say.
“I know it was quick. Have you been adjusting to everything okay?”
Charlotte was quiet. Elisabetta stopped and turned to her.
“You can tell me Charlotte.”
Charlotte bit her lips.
“It’s just that I miss Aube. Cadomiselle is beautiful, but it doesn’t feel like home yet.”
Elisabetta nodded. “It’s been almost thirty years since I left my homeland and I still miss it.”
Charlotte was quiet.
Elisabetta pulled a ring off of her finger. She pressed it into Charlotte’s hand.
“What?”
“My mother gave me that ring when I left home,” Elisabetta explained. “I want you to have it.”
“I can’t take this,” Charlotte said trying to hand it back.
Elisabetta stepped back. “We are family now, Charlotte.”
Charlotte looked down at the ring. It was a simply made, but Charlotte could tell that Elisabetta treasured it.
“Take care of it.”
Charlotte smiled. “I will.”
Elisabetta smiled back. She clapped her hands together.
“Now tell me where I can find that son of mine?”
