Summary: Vale people watches and thinks about Kostya.
Notes: Written as a response to the question "What are your thoughts on humans and their ways?" on my Lint Roll. Happens sometime in the later parts of the second book after Kostya starts standing up to Vale.
Once again, Vale found himself sitting on top of a house in the town surrounding the castle, watching the people milling around the square. Ever since Kostya had told him that he knew nothing about humans, Vale had been spending more time just observing them, wondering what the young man had meant by that.
He never really had bothered to interact with humans outside of the Starikov family. After all, the only thing they seemed to want from him was blessings on their crops, protection from invaders and for the river to not flood too much. There were other things they asked for, but ask for things was all they really did.
Kostya was the only human that didn’t really ask him for things.
And now, one of the few humans who stood up to him.
Vale frowned at that thought. Sometimes, when one of the humans got it in their heads to rant and rave about how people should not worship the country’s patron god, they did things that he did not like such as defile his sanctuary and prevent other people from giving him offerings. The spirit usually ate such kinds of people, so it didn’t happen very often, but it still happened.
But what Kostya did was not that. His prince talked to him as if they were equals and Vale had no idea how to deal with that. Did not Kostya belong to him? He made the young man who he was like had with all of his previous princes, but something happened without Vale noticing and Kostya had changed.
He was sure it was the Firebird’s doing.
Annoyed, he idly turned his attention to the humans walking about below him and spied a young couple who was smiling and talking to each other, noticing no one but each other. They made him even more annoyed and he didn’t know why. He found himself having to resist the urge to throw a small rock or two from his perch up high at them just so they would stop smiling at each other.
Muttering something about how humans made no sense, he stood up and turned his back on the happy couple, wondering why he couldn’t make Kostya smile at him.

This made me smile. I mean, the idea of Vale... pretty much pouting. Being a loose ends because a person doesn't make sense to him and he can't eat said person.
I really enjoyed this!
