“Hello!”

He jumped at her voice. Martine watched as recognition dawned on his face.

He cleared his throat.

“Hello.”

Martine stepped forward.

“So you’re visiting my father?”

Marc nodded. “Yes I am.”

Martine bit her lip. “I’ve never seen you around here before.”

Marc laughed. “Well I’m a new associate.”

“Oh so you are here on business?”

“Yes,” Marc said puffing his chest out. “On business for the king.”

Martine smiled. “Fascinating.”

Marc turned away. Martine followed after him.

“What do you think of Delphine?”

“Your sister?”

Martine nodded. “Yes.”

“She’s quite pretty. Her children are lovely.”

“She’s widowed you know.”

“How sad.”

Martine laughed. “Yes. She’s been a pain in the arse since she moved back home.”

Marc stopped. “Well she’s probably hurting.”

Martine shrugged. “I doubt it. She didn’t really love him.”

Marc watched her for a moment.

He began to walk again. She started after him.

“Why are you following me?” He asked.

“Because you are handsome,” she said lightly.

He stopped abruptly causing her to run into him.

Martine felt his back muscles. “You are very strong.”

Marc stepped away from her quickly.

“I think you should go off and play.”

Martine laughed. “I’m fifteen, not five.”

Marc raised an eyebrow.

She grinned. “I’ve had lovers you know.”

“You shouldn’t tell people that.”

“Why?”

Marc sighed loudly. “It could get you into trouble and it could damage your marriage prospects.”

Martine shrugged.

“You don’t want to get married?”

“Marriage never brought anyone happiness. Sex makes people happy.”

“You are quite forward,” Marc observed.

“Yes I know.”

“Martine!”

Martine cringed at her stepmother’s voice.

“What?!” Martine yelled back turning towards Brigitte’s voice.

“Come here! I need you to look after the baby!”

Martine growled. “Damn you and your spawn.”

She turned back to Marc, but he was gone.

She frowned before smiling. She’d find him again.

Phewf, that is a lot of children... and especially spread out like that. I can see how Martine would be annoyed, but at the same time... that is commitment.

It's weird to see a gender reversal of what almost seems a bit like... I don't know, unwanted attention? Marc obviously seems uncomfortable, but somehow Martine being a girl and also ten years younger makes that okay by the narrative standpoint? O.o I'm not sure what I think about that, but I suppose I'll wait it out, if you're going to come back to this with a follow-up!

Martine comes on a bit strong, doesn't she? No wonder Marc was feeling uncomfortable.

Wow, Martine.

Just wow.
