“Good afternoon, Lady Cadomiselle,” Gilles de Caulmont said as he entered the interrogation room.

“Good afternoon to you as well,” Charlotte replied.

Gilles pulled out the seat across from her. He sat down.

“You were a lady-in-waiting for the Queen?”

“Yes.”

“How long were you in her service?”

“About a year and a half,” Charlotte answered.

“She recently let you go,” Gilles continued.

“Yes about four months ago.”

Gilles leaned back.

“Did the Queen ever have inappropriate visitors?”

Charlotte clenched her teeth.

“My husband visited often as well as the Queen’s male relatives.”

“You never saw the Queen engaging in inappropriate behavior?”

“No.”

Gilles leaned forward towards her. “You are sure?”

“Yes,” Charlotte said.

“Lady Cadomiselle, what if I told you I had evidence that you knew the Queen was engaging in an affair?”

Charlotte held her breath.

“What would you say to that, Lady Cadomiselle?”

“I would like to know where you found such evidence.”

Gilles smiled. “As it is, Lady Cadomiselle, I don’t have any evidence that you were involved in covering up the Queen’s affairs.”

Charlotte was quiet.

“But I will warn you that my brother believes you guilty.”

Charlotte looked up. “What?”

“My brother, Lady Cadomiselle, is questioning the Queen’s entire household, both current and former. He will call you in again.”

Charlotte nodded. “I see.”

Gilles stood. “I am done with your questioning. You may leave.”

Charlotte stood as well. She turned to leave.

“I wish you well, Lady Cadomiselle.”

Charlotte stopped at the door.

“Thank you,” she said.

Technically, she really truly didn't see anything! She heard a giggle, really, could make some suppositions, but that could have been a giggle of triumph over a final flourish to a chess game for all that Charlotte knows, in her defence. And really, she could point fingers at Bathilde for overseeing them, though that's a far more dangerous game!

Things are not looking so good right now.

I think the lesson here is to never have anything to do with the royal family! The king is not someone to piss off, and he has not been entirely rational in the past. I hope Charlotte makes it through this.

Yeeeesh. I guess Gilles could have been warning her? But it sounded like a threat to me.
