Charlotte jumped as the door opened.

She turned as her husband stepped into their bedroom. She immediately noticed the grim look on his face.

“Wha-?” She started.

“The Queen has been arrested,” Jean Luc said heavily.

Charlotte leaned against the bed post.

“How did it happen?” She asked softly.

“Martine was playing with the twins, it seems. There was a scene.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“You were smart to resign from her service,” Jean Luc said coming to her.

Charlotte winced as he touched her forehead. “I feel like I betrayed our family, Jean Luc.”

“Charlotte, look at me.”

She looked up at him.

“You were thinking of our family,” Jean Luc said. “You were thinking of our children. We’ve been through this before. We can’t go through it again.”

Charlotte nodded.

“They arrested Lady Severin,” Jean Luc said beginning to pace.

Charlotte was quiet. “Do you think?”

“You weren’t helping Martine carry out her affair, Charlotte. I suppose Bathilide might implicate you, but all you have to do is tell the truth. You weren’t aware.”

“But shouldn’t I have been?”

Jean Luc turned. “What?”

“I’m supposed to watch after the Queen. I accompanied her to many places. Yet I never once suspected she might have been engaging in an affair. It sounds ludicrous. Do you think they’ll truly believe I had no idea?”

“Charlotte…”

“I’m serious, Jean Luc. People have been found guilty on less evidence!”

“Charlotte, you’re starting to panic,” he said coming back to her.

“Why shouldn’t I panic?” Charlotte said hurriedly. “I heard them!”

“No one knows that,” Jean Luc said taking her by the shoulders.

“Bathilide does!”

Jean Luc pulled her to him. She was shaking. He had only seen her like this once before.

“Everything will be alright,” Jean Luc whispered against her dark hair.

“It won’t,” Charlotte cried.

“You have to have faith.”

Charlotte hiccuped.

“I can’t count on faith, Jean Luc.”

“Then count on me,” he said pulling back. “Count on us.”

Charlotte looked down. She needed to believe that everything would be okay. But that belief wasn't coming so easily.

"But that belief was coming so easily."

(Should that have a 'not' in there? ^^;)

When was she panicking like this that one time before? :o

I do hope Charlotte's decision to leave when she did keeps her safe from accusations, but I understand her fear. Especially since she's been through this before.

Jeeez, poor Charlotte. No wonder she's freaking out so much.
