“You wanted to see me?”
Charlotte turned at her eldest's voice. Jean Kristophe stood on the other side of the room. He looked so very much like his father. She didn't see much of herself in him.
“Yes,” Charlotte said setting down the book she had been reading. “I've been worried about you.”
Jean Kristophe scoffed. “That's a first.”
“What was that?” Charlotte asked absentmindedly.
Jean Kristophe rolled his eyes. “Nothing Mother.”
Charlotte came closer. She stopped in front of him.
“I know...how you feel about the Onfrio girl.”
Jean Kristophe raised his eyebrows, but didn't deny it.
She touched his cheek slightly. “You can talk to me, Kristophe.”
Jean Kristophe stepped back. He turned away slightly.
“There's nothing to talk about, Mother. Elisabeth is getting married and Florianna is traveling with her.”
“Kristophe,” Charlotte said quietly.
“Besides you aren't much of a talker, Mother. You never were.”
Charlotte blushed slightly. “Kristophe if you have something to say.”
Jean Kristophe nodded to his mother. “Of course not.”
He backed away leaving a stunned Charlotte behind.
