Kor had put this off long enough--he and Dev had to leave for the Central Island for the Grand Council meeting in three days, and he needed to have his vade mecum of Clan captains finalized by then. "This is everyone we lost this year?"

Dev nodded. "Only five, and three retired unforced."

"Good. And we have three new ships?"

"Four, actually, they just finished the Morning Glory yesterday." Dev handed him the ship's description.

Kor skimmed it, then looked at his list of captain candidates. "Res for the Heron, I think. She's earned a second. Jen for the Spear. Taz is young for captain."

"I know, but Fil recommended her to take the Star, since he's retiring. And she has the rank, and thinks quick."

Kor considered for a moment, then shook his head. "No. Give her the Glory, she needs a little brother, not a great lady."

Dev nodded and marked her down. "Here's my suggestions for the rest. If you're not givin' Taz the Star, give her to Pek."

Kor looked over the new list, and signed at the bottom. "Pass out the assignments, and tell Rinna I want to take the Grace to the Council."

"All right. When d'you expect to be home tonight?"

"After sundown, but before midnight."

"I'll wait up then." Dev kissed the top of his head, collected the papers, and headed out.

Awww, I really like this. Short and quick and sweet and with just a hint of backstory for a main to spice it up. Well done!
