“What are you doing out of bed?”
Henri turned slightly. He didn’t have the strength to face her completely. But he knew it was his wife.
“I wanted some water,” Henri said.
Cosette looked at his bedside table. The pitcher was sitting there.
“Let me help you back into bed,” Cosette said coming up behind him.
Henri turned back to the mirror. He looked at himself. He saw an old man looking back. There was a red rash on his skin and his eyes were yellow and his hair was thinning.
“When did I get so old?” Henri asked as Cosette walked him back to his bed.
Cosette smiled. “Everyone ages.”
“I look older than my mother did at my age. Why is that?”
“We women have the fountain of youth,” Cosette said, standing back as he lifted himself to the tester bed.
Henri pulled the covers of himself. He watched as Cosette busied herself picking up things around the room.
“How is the baby?”
Cosette smiled to herself at the mention of their daughter, Vivianna.
“She’s doing well. She still throws the occasional temper tantrum though.”
“Just like her old man,” Henri said in a soft voice.
Cosette smiled again.
“I’ll send the physician in to check on you in an hour’s time. Is that alright?”
Henri nodded.
Cosette turned to leave. She got to the door before turning back to her husband.
“Henri,” she called.
He looked up. “Yes?”
Cosette opened her mouth to speak, but closed it again. She couldn’t find the words she wanted to say.
“Nothing rest peacefully.”
