On the surface, nothing has changed.

At first, all he notices are the obvious things--pain, then scars, and of course the shift when it comes, which was--which is--hell; stretching and snapping bones, things growing where they shouldn't, until finally, blessedly, his consciousness fades away and all there is is the wolf and he doesn't have to feel it anymore.

After about six months, though, he starts to notice other things--tiny, unimportant things, like changes in his favorite foods, movies, books, rebalancing of his senses, weird dreams of running through moonlit fields; these don't make much of a difference in his life, so he tries not to worry.

But there are others, that start to scare him--he gets angry faster, over things that used to matter not at all, and while he learns pretty fast to control his newfound temper, he can't make it go away completely.

There's also the times when he goes still and his heart starts thrumming--the one support group meeting he was able to sneak out for, someone mentioned the predator instinct, and that, more than flipping a shit over nothing or having a new fondness for blue meat and gory movies, scares the crap out of him.

He learns to control that, too, but he can't stop feeling it, and even though Kit keeps insisting nothing's changed and he still loves him and they're still brothers, he starts to hate himself just a little bit.

On the surface, yeah, nothing has changed, but underneath, written into his flesh and bones, nothing is the same.

Poor Mel. I really like the way you did this, with one sentence and one piece at a time.
