“She was beautiful, wasn’t she?”
Gilles turned at his mother’s voice. Louise de Caulmont stood quietly behind him.
Gilles nodded and returned his attention back to the portrait of Cosette.
“I came to see the little one. How is he?”
“Fine I suppose,” Gilles said shrugging his shoulders.
“You mean you don’t know?”
Gilles didn’t answer.
Louise turned away. “I’ll go talk to his nurses.”
“Does it ever go away?”
Louise stopped.
“It does, but it’ll always be inside of you, bubbling under the surface.”
Gilles sighed and reached out to touch the painting. Louise turned away, leaving him behind.
