"It isn't you," Jack says, spreading his hands, and shit, she's crying already, big heaving sobs that redden her face with tears.

"What is it then?" she chokes out. "Why can't we be together?"

Because, he wants to say, because I love you just enough to save you, and not enough to stay. Because I'm crazy, down and up like a fucking jump rope and you can't handle that roller-coaster ride. Because you're way too invested already and there's no way this can end well. Because I'd break you before we were done.

All he does say is "I'm sorry."

Poor Jack. Poor Samantha. I want to yell at Jack to see if he'll just explain everything, but lord knows it's way more difficult than it seems, and who knows if her reaction will turn out well?

Probably not? Jack has figured out that Samantha is basically naming their babies by now. So I think there's really no way this could go well.

He could try, but he's not really in a place where it would do him any good, and I don't know if it would help Samantha at all. This is best for him, honestly, and he's got to take care of himself first.
