"Oh my god," Ahava said violently, as soon as Duncan picked up the phone, "I am done with men forever. Finished!"
"You say that every time you have a bad date," Duncan said, shifting the phone to his shoulder so he could keep on feeding the baby. "What happened this time?"
She made a sound of disgust. "The usual. Why does everyone seem to think it's okay to ask about your words on a first date? First of all, they are private, and second, it's not exactly my favorite topic."
He hummed in agreement and comfort. He'd been lucky enough to meet Leila, but Ahava had constant problems with men—and it did not help that she knew full well who her soulmate was.
Him, to be precise. He made soothing noises into the phone.
"This latest asshole though," she was saying, "this guy, I told him I didn't want to talk about my words and he got all snide about it, all "what are you afraid of?" So I told him I knew damn well who my soulmate was and it wasn't him, and he accused me of being a tease."
"That jerk," Duncan said, mindful of Safiya's baby ears.
Ahava's voice softened. "Got my goddaughter there?"
"Yup," he said. "It's lunchtime. You want to say hi?"
"No," she said, "let her eat. You know she's only three months old, right?"
Duncan blinked. "Um. Yes. It was a landmark moment in my life."
"Well, I'm just saying. She probably won't remember and repeat any curse words until she's at least eighteen months."
"It doesn't hurt to be careful," he said, primly. "He called you a tease for dating somebody not your soulmate?"
Back to the disgusted noises. "He did! Can you believe that? Like my soulmate couldn't possibly be my best friend in all the world and so not someone I'm sexually interested in."
"Ew," he said, and added, "No offense."
"No, I get it," she said. "You're like a sibling to me too. But... god. Just once I want to meet someone who won't judge me straight off. It's so... It's so gross. Such a turn-off."
Safiya had finished her bottle and let out a thin wail. Duncan put her up against his shoulder and patted her back, gently. "It is rather kind of them to tell you up front that they aren't worth your time."
"They're still assholes," Ahava said, and sighed. "I just want someone who isn't an asshole. Know anybody like that?"
His mouth quirked up in a humorless smile—not that she could see it. "Nobody of your preferred gender, sorry. I feel like I should apologize for men as a whole."
"You should," she said, and they both laughed. "Seriously, though, I'm glad I have you. Even though you keep cockblocking me."
"Entirely inadvertent, I assure you." Safiya burped and a warm wetness soaked the burping cloth over his shoulder. "I got to go, Ahava, the baby needs her nap."
"Okay," Ahava said. "Kiss her for me. And keep an eye out for any non-asshole men who might be interested in a fabulous girl like me."
"You know it," Duncan said, and hung up.

"Well, I'm just saying. She probably won't remember and repeat any curse words until she's at least eighteen months."
And Duncan asking if she wants to say hi to the baby. That's just the sweetest.
Up to and including the spitup. Hell, call that icing on the cake.
