Summary: Freya is having a bad day and a hard time smiling
Notes: Constructive criticism is, as always, welcome
She smiles when she sees his name flash on her screen.
"What are you doing online? :p"
Rolling her eyes she quickly answers. "Seeing if you were here."
The answer arrives within a couple of seconds. "I am :-)"
Biting back a laugh she minimalisms the chat window. After all, she's at her work, working. And she is. She truly is. But talking to him is too addicting. Certainly when she's feeling down. She needs to hear him when she's feeling sad. Certainly when she can't explain why she is feeling this way. Part of her wants to tell him. Tell him she's having a bad day. Wants him to comfort her and tell her it's alright. But he's in the middle of his exams and he doesn't need to be bothered with her problems for the moment. If only she herself knew what the problem really was. It's been a really long time ago since she felt down for no reason. She hasn't felt this way at all since they became a couple.
She keeps the chat window open the entire day. They don't say much. Both of them too busy working. But they are there. When either of them wants to talk. Just knowing that is enough.
"Logging off, I can go home. ^^"
"Bye bye <3 xx"
"Love you Nick x
The sun is shining when she cycles home. Not too much wind. Perfect weather really. If only she would feel okay as well. It's hard to smile today - and that's something no one is used of her.
There is nothing much she's planning on doing today. Taking care of the vegetable garden of her parents, seeing they are visiting her grandparents in Japan for an entire month. And other than that. There is not much she's going to do. Making dinner. Eating. And not getting out of her couch. Watching a movie or reading a book. Or perhaps writing a little again. Or sleeping. Sleeping sounds nice...
"Good afternoon Freya. Parents on a trip?"
She smiles while greeting the neighbour on the garden.
"Yes. So I'm taking care of the vegetables for this month."
They stay talking for a little while longer while both of them continue to work.
"Well, perhaps 'till tomorrow."
The neighbour waves her off while she cycles home. The kind smile vanishes as soon as she's out of sight and a soft sigh escapes her. Pretending can be tiresome sometimes.
Dinner will be quick and easy. A bowl of tomato sauce and pasta. Not much work. She can't bring herself to put much energy into preparing food.
She just set herself down when her phone rings. Nick.
"Hey darling. How are you?"
She smiles and looks down at her plate. Always such perfect timing.
"Okay. But I was just about to have dinner. Do you mind that I'm eating while we're talking or shall I call you back when I've finished?"
She already knows the answer though.
"I don't mind. I just wanted to hear you. I already miss you too much. And it's only been a week..."
Freya laughs softly. "You're sweet. And I miss you too."
She hears his laughing echo and for the first time that day, her smile turns genuine. He has that gift. Of making her feel better instantly. And it only takes him a word, or a smile, or his hand on hers, or a kiss.
"How are you Freya?"
There's nothing in his voice that betrays him. But it's the fact he asks her again. It makes her close her eyes. Not that it matters, he can't see it anyway.
"I'm okay Nick. Just a little tired. And a crappy day at work. And a small headache because my shoulders and neck hurt. It's nothing special. And nothing to worry about."
It's only a small lie. She just doesn't want him to worry. She wouldn't even be able to explain why she is feeling this way. Except for the fact that she is feeling fat. That she has no condition. That she knows she has to work on it. But that she cannot find the energy or the strength to do so, to get out of her couch and to start moving again. She doesn't have a problem with her weight or her looks. Not really... But she just feels... Unhealthy, if that makes any sense...
And she misses him. She will not deny that. She misses him so much. Not seeing him every evening. Or almost every evening. Not having him in her arms, or hiding herself in his. Not feeling his kisses and his hands all over her body.
"Oh."
His voice sounds sad.
"Don't worry."
She can almost see him shake his head when she hears his sigh.
"I just wish you would tell me what's bothering you. What's really bothering you..."
Her sharp intake of breath. It's all the confirmation he needs.
"Freya..."
Almost pleading. It makes her shake her head. Biting back tears. Wondering if she's hurting him by keeping it to herself. Although, there is nothing to really be keeping to herself. She just doesn't know, can't explain it. It actually gets her even more angry.
"I don't know Nick. I just don't know. I'm feeling sad and down and I don't know why. I don't know what's wrong. I can't explain it. I just... It's hard to smile today."
She takes a deep breath.
"And I don't want to bother you with it. It feels so silly and stupid and..."
He interrupts her quickly.
"Want me to pass by?"
It makes her shake her head. Feeling guilty because she made him worry and...
"No Nick. I told you before. I don't want to bother you with something this stupid. And it's just today. Yesterday was a great day. I'm sure tomorrow will be as well. I just don't know what's wrong with me today. And..."
She takes a deep breath for a second. Is glad he stays silent as well.
"How come you can read me so well? Even when you don't see me. Even when you don't hear me."
"I'm hearing you now."
Rolling her eyes. She knows he knows it's not what she meant. They both know he couldn't have heard it at her voice either.
"Did I just make you smile?"
She laughs when she hears the mirth in his voice.
"You know you did."
"I'm glad. But I was serious you know. Do you want me to pass by?"
Biting her lips she thinks it through. Not that there is much to think about.
"You know I would want nothing more. But, you're having an exam tomorrow. I'm not going to let you waste time."
She quickly goes on before he can react to that. Already hearing his comment that she is most certainly no waste of time.
"I'm okay. Really. Hearing you just now cheered me up immensely. Thank you for calling, it was a lovely surprise and just what I needed. And I'll see you tomorrow evening... I'll be okay."
Freya knows he can hear the smile in her voice. It's all the prove he needs to be convinced that she really is and will be for the rest of the evening.
"I love you Freya. You know I do, don't you?"
Closing her eyes she lets her head rest against the back of the couch.
"Yeah, I know you do. But remind me of it again tomorrow evening?"
She's teasing and flirting and she knows it.
"I will."
He doesn't need to tell her how much he's counting down 'till that moment. She could hear it in his voice.
"See you tomorrow darling."
The kiss he blows her through the telephone makes her giggle.
"I love you. See you tomorrow."
They hang up and she looks down at her plate. Not having touched her dinner yet.
Smiling she stands up, putting it in the microwave. She actually feels hungry right now. Quickly she takes her cell phone out of her pocket. Typing a quick message.
Thank you! :-)
Nick will perfectly know - without a doubt - what she means. Her smile is back and she feels better. She really does.
