Notes: Around the time this takes place, Marie has been queen for two years. Alexandrine has been taking care of her nieces since Martine's death, their father left her in charge of their well being and Henri (II) didn't contest that. Alexandrine and Jean Luc are cousins through the Everart side, his father and her late mother being siblings. Agnes died in around 1129 AW.
“It’s a beautiful day,” Alexandrine said inhaling the fresh air.
Jean Luc smiled. “Indeed it is.”
“Cousin Luc!”
They turned at the sound. The fourteen year old Princess Diana was standing on one leg. Her white gown had grass stains on it and her long blonde hair was wild.
“Yes Diana?”
“Don’t I look beautiful?” Diana preened.
Jean Luc laughed. “Yes, you do.”
“More beautiful than Aunt Drina?” Diana asked hopping around on one foot.
“Diana, have some humility!” Alexandrine chastised.
Diana put her other foot down. She stuck out her tongue at Alexandrine before running off to find her twin.
Jean Luc laughed. “She’s just like her mother at that age.”
Alexandrine smiled ruefully.
Jean Luc leaned back. He stared up at the sky.
“Today makes sixteen years,” Jean Luc said quietly.
“Sixteen years since what?” Alexandrine said pushing a stray blonde hair out of her face.
“Agnes died,” Jean Luc said scratching his cheek absentmindedly.
Agnes...Alexandrine vaguely recalled a woman named Agnes. She had seen her on a few occasions when she visited Jean Luc’s estate. She always kept out of the way though. She didn’t remember much about her.
“She was important to you?”
Jean Luc glanced at her. “You can say that.”
“Oh,” Alexandrine said hugging her arms.
They were quiet as they watched Diana and Ana run through the gardens. Birds were humming in the trees and the air was fragrant with violets.
“She was the only woman I ever loved,” Jean Luc said suddenly. “In the romantic way, I suppose you could say.”
“But what about Charlotte?” Alexandrine said.
Jean Luc smiled slightly.
“I love Charlotte, but not like that. Charlotte is the mother of my children. She’s my wife, but our relationship…is more of a friendship.”
Alexandrine watched him.
“Agnes,” Jean Luc continued without waiting for her to respond, “There was something about her, I can’t describe it, but she was something.”
He looked off into the distance.
“Do you think you’ll ever love again?” Alexandrine asked softly.
“Who knows?” Jean Luc said. “I’m getting older and that sort of thing tends to happen to the young.”
Alexandrine grinned.
Jean Luc ruffled her hair. “It’s your turn now, Drina.”
She rolled her eyes. “I don’t think so.”
He laughed. “One day, sweet Drina. One day.”
