There's a smear of paint on Joanna's cheek and laughter in her eyes, and she's the most perfect woman Hugh's ever known.
This isn't what he anticipated when she offered to help him paint his apartment; this—this earthquake of the soul, this tumult in his chest. She's everything he could ask for in a friend, and it hurts to be apart from her, but he doesn't love her. He can't.
She dabs a spot of yellow paint on his nose, giggles when he blinks. "You were far away."
"I'm here now," he says, and turns back to the walls.
