Sky Blue, Bittersweet: With His Head In the Clouds

Name: Jack
Story: Iron Plum Blossom, by [personal profile] isana
Colors: Sky Blue, Bittersweet 2. memories
Supplies and Styles: Tapestry, Saturation, Miniature Collection, Graffiti (Recycle), Collage, Reimaging
Word Count: ~600
Rating: PG-13ish?
Notes: So at this point I'm pretty sure "this is not what I sat down to write" is my motto or something. Here is a saturation about Huang Ming, Yuyan's father. Because it seemed like a good idea at midnight, and because reading through the [personal profile] ironplumblossom archives in preparation for this, I decided that I kind of ♥ Ming a lot. Some of these are pre-[community profile] rainbowfic, but hopefully it's still considered in the spirit of the challenge. All are linked in the [personal profile] ironplumblossom journal because that was easier to search through. I hope I didn't get anything egregiously wrong, Isana!

6. tornado [Regretful]

There was a time when he didn't understand how war tore through a village or a country, laying waste and tossing people in every direction. He'd just begun to really see it when he met Wen, and it only became more impossible to forget.

He'd never understand, but he knew what it meant to lose and go on. He smiled at Wen as best he could, and meant the words he said, and hoped that would be enough.

5. wind [Violet]

The trees rustled outside, almost loud enough that he wasn't sure he heard the second noise. He stood anyway, just to check.

He stood a long time near her, trying to decide what to do. At first he wasn't even sure she was asleep. Then he wondered if he should wake her.

He settled for staying nearby, close enough that if she so much as whispered that she needed him, he could be there.

3. cloud [Heartfelt]

The first time she wrote her name for him, it was like an introduction. Her intelligence was sharp but not violent. He saw in her the passage of clouds through the sky, light breaking through dark grey.

The flowers were an impulsive gesture, and it's not until he arrives with him that he realizes he doesn't know what she'll think. They'd just reminded him of her, tightly clustered but still needing the sun to break through. He hoped eventually he would see the sky clear.

7. storm [The Sun and the Moon]

It wasn't a choice he'd made lightly, and it weighed on his mood. But Ming couldn't see another way to protect people - not just Wen, but everyone else. He couldn't be at every well, but maybe he could stop the need for them.

He tried not to think about the way he ached at the idea of leaving Wen alone. She needed her silences, too. He was always in her hair; she needed room to finish grieving now.

But he promised to return; he wouldn't make her grieve again.

9. gas [Proposal]

Ming worried over the letter, trying not to think too much about what a scholar like Wen's father would have thought of his calligraphy. He wasn't usually a nervous person, but today his stomach felt tight; there was so much to do, and he wasn't sure he could do it properly, and Wen wasn't there to correct him.

But if he made it work, she would always be there to correct him.

2. air [An Ordinary Man IV]

There's something in the air in Lin'an, even with the war ended. It's stifling and sour at the same time, and Ming has learned to trust his instincts instead of his superiors. He can't help but hope the emperor forgets him quickly.

8. hurricane [Challenges]

It was a little like being captain again, being utterly responsible for other lives and completely unsure he would be able to live up to what was asked of him.

Even something as simple as a bath seemed impossible, and both children seemed so fragile in his arms. But when he reached the calm eye in the center of the storm, he knew that it would turn out okay.

4. breeze [A Rusting Sword]

Each morning is the same, but it's a pleasant sameness. Not the monotony of the worst parts of war, but a comfort. He rises before the sun, and the ocean breezes greet him as he goes down to meet them. The simplicity of it all makes him smile.

10. rainbow [Don't Forget That We Still Love You]

Letting Yuyan go may be the hardest thing he's had to do as a parent, and there's a part of him that wants to drag her home and tell her she doesn't have to go.

The stronger the urge is, the more he smiles. He doesn't want to make this harder than it already is for her, so he tells her she'll be fine. He knows she can handle it.

"You’ll be just fine." He says it as much for himself as for her. Then he watches her go.

1. sky [For Old Times' Sake]

Sitting beside his daughter, watching the lanterns go up, he can almost feel like she's a child again.

Hearing what she once wished for, he wonders at how early she stopped being one.
