“Are you feeling any better?” Anne asked placing a cool cloth over her father's head.
Claude sighed deeply. Anne touched his forehead. He was burning up.
“You must let me call a physician for you,” Anne said softly.
Claude raised his hand weakly.
“I do not trust those acursed men,” Claude said gruffly. “They killed your mother.”
Anne shook her head lightly. “Oh Papa, you know that's not true.”
“It is,” Claude insisted. “If I could prove it, they would be worm's meat.”
“That wouldn't bring Mama back though would it?”
“No,” Claude said lying back against his pillow. “But it'd make me feel better.”
Anne clicked her tongue softly. Old king Claude had grown grumpier in the years after Queen Rosanne's death. But he was a good king, if not somewhat of a recluse.
“Papa?”
Claude didn't answer. She leaned forward to see if he were asleep. His breathing was even and his chest rose and fell.
Anne scooted closer to him. She laid her head on his chest like she used to when she was a child.
“I want to tell you something,” Anne began. “But I am too cowardly to do it while you are awake.”
Claude began to snore.
“I...I am in love. I'm not even sure how it happened. But I love him.”
Anne listened to her father's heart beat. It was steady.
“I wish to marry him. But I know you will not agree,” Anne said sadly. “He's a simple man and far from a grand prince that you imagined ruling by my side. But he's who I want. The way mother wanted you. The way you wanted her.”
Anne sat up and sighed. What was she doing? It would never happen. Michel would never be hers.
She looked back at her father and smiled. She had her father though. In that at least she was fulfilled.
