auguris
'verse: Universe Lost
Story: Battle
Colors: Fire Opal 18. Hell or high water
Supplies and Styles: Canvas, Glitter: Vulnerable
Word Count: 582
Rating: R
Warnings: Death and bodies.
Summary: Tothos' last battle as a soldier.
Tothos used the hill as cover, rifle nestled under her arm. Her shields were dead, not depleted but hacked -- not just hers, either, going by the handful of bodies at the bottom of her hill. They were face down. She could pretend she didn't know them.
One of the Ker's new guns had torn through her armor -- literally, just shredded it and the flesh underneath. She had ripped open a patch and slapped it on, but either it was defective or the wound was worse than she knew. The bleeding hadn't stopped. There were rumors that the Terran network had bridged the Gap and were arming the Ker, but that was impossible. Someone would know. Someone would tell them.
She tore off the patch and slapped on a new one, swallowing the pain. It wouldn't help but she let herself think it would; she couldn't hide on this hill forever. She crawled up and peered over; no one tried to take her head off. She flipped her visor on -- nothing popped up. It was possible that had been hacked, too. The network was offline, she knew that much. She pushed it back over her head -- better to trust her eyes for this.
The battle had moved on -- she ran towards the sound of gunfire, ignoring the bodies of her comrades and the Ker. Without her visor she couldn't tell the difference.
The sparse woodland opened up into a field of yellowing, waist-high grass trembling with the movement of -- what? Her people? Theirs? A pack of Nobwolves?
She crouched as a hovercraft descended at the far end of the field, near the huge blue and white lighthouse that marked the entrance to the Bolan Strait. The doors opened and a dozen Ker soldiers climbed on; her comrades rose from the grass and she grinned as she fired along with them.
One turned, grinning back; Roj's eyes went wide when he recognized her. "I saw you go down!"
"Keep firing you idiot!" But she was laughing; the Kers were retreating, she was alive, Roj was alive, her entire unit hadn't gone down.
The hovercraft rose into the sun, blocking their -- no, that wasn't right. The setting sun was behind her. Something else lit up the craft, something huge and bright.
She realized it was moving, fast, straight for the field; someone shouted "Run!" and as she turned to comply Roj tackled her, arms around her middle, blue-purple shield growing to encompass the both of them. They hit the ground in tandem with the bomb.
The earth tossed them; she heard the explosion and then nothing. She blacked out, she must have; she came to her senses, still underneath Roj, his flickering shield protecting them both from the fire.
She rose, slowly, keeping physical contact with Roj -- the moment they separated, his shield would shrink from her. He didn't wake but his breath still came, ragged and harsh. She pressed a kiss to his dry lips before hauling him over her shoulders, legs shaking. How much blood had she lost? How long would the shield hold up?
No one else stood. Nothing else moved. The whole field was alight; the lighthouse leaned towards the sea. She could feel her blood pounding in her ears, but nothing else.
Didn't matter; she would walk away from this. Roj would walk away from this. Their unit was down to two. She wasn't about to let that number fall any lower.

Oh, they do -- this predates the lighthouse scene.
