Notes: Brigitte is the daughter of Barbe de Grieut, who is the slighter younger sister of Charlotte Duvall. Leon is Charlotte's second child, Jean Kristophe is the eldest. The time that this takes place is mid 1139. Henri I is still alive, but is rapidly aging. He's also Brigitte's father through his liaison with her mother. She has four full siblings from this relationship along with siblings from her mother's marriages.

“You're wrong Brigitte,” Leon said sighing deeply and shaking his head.

“And how am I wrong?” Brigitte said tapping the plate in front of her with a fingers. She knew that Leon hated this, so she insisted upon doing it every time she was invited over to the Everart household.

“Don't do that,” Leon said.

Brigitte clicked faster. “Do what?”

“That tapping!”

Brigitte stopped and held up her fingers. “Oh you mean this?”

“Yes.”

Brigitte clicked her fingers against the plate and smiled. “It's my nerves, Leon.”

Leon grimaced. “I'll show you nerves!”

“Sit down Leon,” Jean Luc Everart, Leon's father, said coming into the dining room. His younger children followed him.

Leon lowered himself down in his seat and shot daggers at Brigitte, who smiled brightly back at him.

Everyone settled into their places and the food was served.

“How's your mother?” Jean Luc asked Brigitte after everything had been placed.

Brigitte waved her hand. “Oh you know how Maman is Uncle. Still as jolly as ever.”

Jean Luc chuckled.

“Where's Aunt Charlotte?”

“She's at court,” Leon butted in. “Serving the queen of course.”

“Of course,” Brigitte said slowly.

“What were you two arguing about?” Jean Kristophe asked softly.

Brigitte smiled at Jean Kristophe. “Oh your evil brother and I were talking about humanism ”

“Oh?” Jean Luc said putting down his utensil.

Brigitte nodded. “Leon is of the thought that humans are more prone to believe in their faith while I think humans are more capable and have the potential to believe more in themselves.”

“You're a smart girl,” Jean Luc said.

Brigitte grinned. “Thank you Uncle!”

“Father don't encourage her,” Leon balked as though he were suffering. “I'm not saying we as humans can't believe in ourselves but it's much better to put our hopes into faith.”

Jean Luc leaned back and glanced at his son.

“You've been listening to my mother, haven't you Leon?”

Lucien and Laurent burst out laughing and Jean Kristophe even cracked a smile. Brigitte grinned but didn't saying anything.

“So what if I have?” Leon said clearly affronted.

Jean Luc shook his head. “Leon, listening to your grandmother is all fine and well. But what do you think?”

“That is what I think,” Leon said firmly.

“Alright my boy,” Jean Luc said finishing his wine.

Jean Luc pushed back from the table. He looked over at Brigitte.

“I have some books you may like,” Jean Luc said. “Would you like to see them?”

Brigitte lit up. “Oh yes!”

Jean Luc held out his arm and Brigitte eagerly took it. She glanced back at Leon and winked before being led away by Jean Luc.

“Urgh!” Leon said. “Why does everyone coddle her?”

Jean Kristophe stood. “Stop being so stuffy.”

“You stop being so moody!” Leon shot back, but Jean Kristophe had left the dining room already.

Leon looked at his younger siblings who were staring at him.

“What?!”

Leon didn't wait for an answer, he stood up hastily. He was going to his room. He needed peace. Everyone was slowly going mad.

Oh, Leon. He's kind of pig-headed, but it never feels good when it seems like everyone is laughing at you.
